The non-western theory I chose for this week’s discussion is Buddhism. The subject matter for Buddist theory is interbeing and interconnectedness. A principle in Buddhism is the dependent origination. Mosig (2006) describes dependent cognition as the belief that there is causality in the world; therefore, everything is connected. The value of Buddhism is a focus on the inner self and its connectedness to everything else. Buddhism values consciousness and self-actualization.
One of the problems that Buddhist theory addresses is stress. Similar to Western theories, stress is a factor that people experience. What distinguishes the Buddhist approach is how stress affects people. Western philosophies believe that if stressful situations can be mastered or avoided, then stress will not occur (Tyson and Pongruengphant, 2007). In contrast, Buddhist theory states that the stress is still unavoidable.
Buddhist theory uses mediation to address the problem of stress. Seekircher et al. (2023) researched mediation's effects on stress. The researchers found
the participants reported less psychological stress when they performed mediation (Seekircher et al., 2023). To assess the impacts of retraining attention, researchers conducted a study on meditation and saw that the participants were able to report reduced stress (Oman et al., 2006)
Professionals use meditation to address the problem of chronic pain. Research researchers studied the effect of meditation compared with education and found that meditation significantly reduced the need to take substances due to pain (Turner et al., 2023).
Non-western theory influenced Western psychology as concepts of the Buddhist theory have been in and implemented in modern cognitive research. Some of the examples stated above show in fullness being used in studies and practices to understand the effect. Over time, I anticipate greater integration between Western and non-Western theories.
