Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 First Draft Definition Argument Essay Erasmia Reynolds Grand Canyon University
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2 First Draft Definition Argument Essay The selling of organs in the United States is illegal. Organ selling means that people are willingly giving their organs for money. There is now a black market for this because it is illegal. Organs should not be sold to someone if they need one, they should be donated. Selling organs has been a problem for a long time. The selling of organs in the United States is unethical because there is an increase in inequality for access of organs, favors one population over the other, and there would be mistrust in the medical setting. Inequality for Access of Organs The selling of organs leads to unequal access of organs because people who need organs will not be able to get them if they must pay for them. People should not have to give money for something like this especially if there are people who will die if they cannot get one. The distribution of organs would lead to inequality because those who donated organs when paying was not allowed and the people who got money once paying for them would be allowed is unfair (Cohen, 2014). When things change, people who did not get the same treatment as someone else would be upset. If someone cannot afford buying an organ while others can, that leads to inequality of access and favors certain populations over others. Organs should be able to be given to people by someone donating them from the kindness of their heart. The waitlist for people who currently need organs is 103,955 ( Data - OPTN , n.d.). With the amount of people who are currently waiting and those who will need organs in the future it is unfair to pay for organs. Someone who needs an organ should have access without having to spend a bunch of money for it. There are some religions that are for organ donations and others that are not.
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 3 Orthodox Christians do not believe in donating their organs for someone else because it desecrates one’s body. With that in mind, organ donations should not be taken lightly. One Population Over Another Everyone does have an equal right to have a life and live, however, should stealing people for the organs be the solution? The buying and selling of organs will favor one population over the other. If people must start buying organs the poor will not be able to get what they need to live, and the rich will be able to buy what they need when they need it. This will lead to favoring the rich over the poor. There is also something called organ trafficking which is when someone gets trafficked for their organs. This act alone is not only wrong and illegal, but it is something that is making it possible for people to get organs they need. Trafficking is a problem and if it becomes harder to get organs, organ trafficking will continue to rise. A shortage of organs around the world is leading to illegal trades of organs which is bringing in 1.5 billion dollars yearly from 12,000 illegal transplants (Gonzalez et.al., 2020). There are thousands of people who die each year because they are not getting the care they need. There needs to be a solution, however, illegally taking people and taking their organs is not the answer. Allowing organs to be both bought and sold will create inequalities and violate rights ( Organ Selling and Transplants , n.d.). Conclusion In conclusion, selling organs is wrong. If someone needs to get an organ, there should be a way to get one for them without breaking laws and doing unethical things. It may take a lot of research and discussions to get to that solution, however, it needs to be done because there are people dying because they cannot get one. The selling of organs in the United States is
