2 Early ethics Everyone, at some time in their lives, has had to decide between two or more options that presented them with competing or even opposite aims, values, and rewards. These competing goals give rise to moral quandaries to which every person is called upon to react no matter their station in life. According to Miljeteig et al. (2023), the moral compass is the tension between doing what is right by others and what is right in one's own eyes, whether civic, social, or religious ethics informs those eyes. This article recounts an ethical difficulty I had in my junior year of high school, how I resolved it, and the factors that influenced my decision. Dilemma of Right Versus Wrong Once, I had to come up with such a tricky answer that I alienated a buddy. When I was sixteen years old, my parents left my elder brother and me at home during a summer break so they could go to work. Later that day, my friends finally got me to agree to their idea that we celebrate my birthday by throwing a party, even though I knew my parents would severely punish me if they found out. After my older brother was forced to make plans with his pals, I took the reins and threw a huge party, to which most of my classmates showed up. I don't recall how my friends persuaded me to let them use my parents' vehicle, but we also made some awful food and drink choices, and I had my first and worst encounter with alcohol that day. After destroying my parent's automobile by crashing into a massive tree, my pals returned later to express their utmost concerns about the situation. It was up to me to decide whether to tell my parents the truth when they got home. Solution My parents had a party, drank alcohol, and let some of my friends use the vehicle, and I had to decide whether or not to lie to them to avoid punishment. On the other hand, I considered doing the honorable thing and telling the truth, no matter the consequences. My
3 parents blamed my brother because they thought he was the only one who could have made such a blunder, given his history of drug use and dangerous driving. But I decided to come clean, explaining what happened that day that caused me to lose the confidence of my friends and led to their punishment when my parents notified their parents. As part of my punishment, I was required to participate in after-school community service projects and was barred from interacting with my peers outside of the school day. Influence and Reflection My parents instilled in me the importance of living a decent life and making choices based on moral ideas and virtues when I was growing up. I learned early on that being truthful is essential and that lying may have adverse effects on one's life and those of others around them. According to this week's reading, I met the virtue theory of ethics that clearly explains and characterizes what my parents taught me about values. Truthfulness and decency are highlighted as central to virtue theory by O'Mathúna et al. (2020). By developing and maintaining these virtues and adhering to these moral ideals, one may improve one's character and learn to make ethical choices in one's everyday life. In contrast to theories of ethics that emphasize norms and their observance, virtue theory emphasizes the importance of a person's moral character in making ethical decisions. Conclusion I do not believe there's a thing I would alter now that I've had time to reflect. Even though it was challenging and controversial, I think I made the correct decision. That day, I gained some critical insight into the nature of morals and ethics. So, I applied the virtue theory of ethics to my predicament and found the answer in being honest. Even though my buddy stopped trusting me, I rebuilt that trust with my parents and grew as a person due to being forthright about my shortcomings. Given the situation, I believe I performed as well as possible.
