1 The Business of Being Born A family's entire life path can be shaped by the decisions made surrounding childbirth, which is a very intimate and transforming process. The focus of the documentary "The Business of Being Born," which was made by Abby Epstein and produced by Ricki Lake, focuses on two different methods of childbirth: the traditional hospital birth that doctors attend, and the alternative home birth that midwives assist. This investigation challenges expectant parents to critically assess their preferences and goals in the pursuit of a safe and satisfying birthing experience, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and drawbacks associated with each option. The traditional option of giving birth in a hospital with medical supervision has multiple advantages. First off, having medical professionals on hand guarantees prompt action in the event of difficulties, giving expectant parents peace of mind (Lake & Epstein, 2008). Emergency rooms in hospitals are well-equipped to handle high-risk pregnancies and lower the risks of unanticipated complications. Additionally, moms have choices for managing their labor pain because to the availability of medical therapies. The hospital environment does have its disadvantages, though. Standardized procedures may result in needless interventions and have an adverse effect on the natural course of labor, raising concerns about the medicalization of childbirth. The fact that medical staff rotates, making care impersonal, and the possibility of an excessive dependence on procedures are important drawbacks to take into account. On the other hand, choosing to give birth at home with midwives supports a more customized and organic method of labor. Throughout the whole pregnancy and birthing process, midwives develop a tight relationship between the birth attendant and the mother by providing one-on-one care. Stress levels are lower and the childbirth process is more comfortable in the cozy and familiar home setting. Furthermore, a home birth can empower moms due to the autonomy and
2 control they are granted (Lake & Epstein, 2008). On the other hand, there may be a risk if emergency resources are not immediately accessible. A restricted range of pain management choices, predominantly centred around non-pharmacological techniques, may additionally exacerbate the childbirth experience for certain moms. High-risk pregnancies might not be a good fit for home deliveries, which highlights the significance of a thorough risk assessment. In conclusion, choosing between a home birth with midwives and a hospital delivery with doctors is a very personal choice that requires thorough evaluation of the benefits and drawbacks of each option. Prospective parents are invited to consider their priorities, desires, and risk factors closely after watching the documentary "The Business of Being Born". Home births place a higher value on a more organic, individualized experience than hospitals, which provide emergency facilities and rapid medical interventions. The secret is to match these choices with personal preferences, understanding that every family's birthing experience is distinct and varied. References Lake, R. (Producer), & Epstein, A. (Director).
