Contemporary Professional Midwifery 1 CONTEMPORARY PROFESSIONAL MIDWIFERY - PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT REFLECTIVE ASSIGNMENT by (name) Course Professor The Name of the School The City and State where it is located The Date
Contemporary Professional Midwifery 2 This reflective essay stems from my participation in my first-year midwifery module. I was privileged to interview Nurse X, a Children's Nurse and a lecturer actively engaged in clinical practice across various responsibilities. This interview aimed to explore the role of Children's Nurses in multidisciplinary teams and the collaborative support they provide for pregnant individuals. The insights from this interview were later shared with classmates in group presentations. In the ensuing discussion, I will explore how this interview has enriched my understanding and shed light on crucial aspects of the midwifery Nursing field. Furthermore, I will construct an action plan to outline steps for advancing my skills and knowledge as a student nurse, drawing on the insights gained. Reflection, a cornerstone of a nurse's professional development, allows healthcare professionals to learn from experiences, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and evidence-based practices to enhance medical services for pregnant individuals (Carter et al., 2019). Utilizing Gibbs' Reflective Cycle (1988) as a framework for this reflective exercise, I aim to comprehensively explore my experiences by consolidating the feelings and analysis sections into a unified unit (Adeani et al., 2020). In line with ethical considerations and confidentiality guidelines from The Code and The Professional Standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2023), names and locations have been altered to safeguard the identity of those involved. Description The focal point of interest lies in analyzing an interview featuring Nurse X, a Children's Nursing lecturer and practitioner in children’s nursing. I participated in this session, which was part of a study day within the framework of the first-year midwifery nursing module. This interview aimed to carry out an extensive and critical discussion on Nurse X's influence within MDT and the relationship between mental healthcare and children nursing staff regarding
Contemporary Professional Midwifery 3 tailored assistance to mothers-to-be. This immersive experience unfolded virtually, allowing for a more detailed analysis and subsequent peer group discussions. The academic exploration centered on understanding an interview on YouTube, showcasing Nurse X in her virtual engagement session. As such, the experience provided a specific ambiance, encouraging meticulous analysis of what a Child's nurse was about in this wider MDT scene. In addition, this digital format allowed for open peer-to-peer communication, which made it easy for these mental health nurses and children's nurse collaborative efforts. However, the virtual environment was critical for all participants as it provided useful information about nurses' problems during antenatal periods. Feeling I participated in a participatory exercise, immersing myself in the recorded interview featuring Nurse X, a children’s nurse and lecturer. I got absorbed by the issues involved in the functions taken by Nurse X. Many people are interested in understanding why MDT dynamics are so complicated, and such amazement would not be that surprising. Such a change of perspective has greatly changed how people understand the range of tasks meant to assist a pregnant woman by medical staff. The working together of Midwives and Children's nurses was brought out again as something I appreciated. I wanted to see these two professions working together and strengthening a teamwork culture. As I listened to the conversation on tape, my feelings went through different phases —from curiosity to the feeling of gratefulness. Upon achieving a better comprehension of the role undertaken by psychiatric nurses and how they approach it collaboratively, my initial assumptions started to change, and I was forced to reevaluate them. Evaluation

Contemporary Professional Midwifery 4 The presence of Nurse X during the recorded interviews revealed numerous positive attributes. Notably, she displayed a depth of comprehension concerning the code of ethics and practice related to pediatric nursing. Such vast information enabled the audience to appreciate the complexities in which they were embedded as part of an interdisciplinary team. The positive feature that stood out was Nurse X's ability to explain perinatal mental health care, which collaborates with midwifery and supports pregnant women. Demystifying the role of children's nurses was effective through her presentational style, which made it easy and understandable. Moreover, the effectiveness employed in an artful application of suspense has been identified as among the other strong tools during the interview. Challenging traditional ideas about the position of children's nurses in perinatal care helped turn the corner on how they are perceived. Children's nurse X eloquently highlighted her involvement and support towards pregnant women and underscored the important role played by the children's nurses within the maternal health care sector. Although there were many positives in the evaluation, some improvements are needed. This is one of the stakeholders' major fears regarding their short communication because much of it was oral, which entailed needing to be visually engaging. Although Nurse X's oral comments were explicit and instructive, it was a wasted opportunity that did not include motion pictures. The lack may jeopardize the target group's involvement, thus reducing the intensity of the whole performance. The evaluation also noted that more substantive visual media support could benefit the presentation. However, introducing different multimedia elements would surely improve the student's learning experience by allowing more students to grasp the provided information more easily. This visual deficit could lead to poor engagement by audiences and an ineffective learning environment, thus reducing the overall effectiveness of communication.
Contemporary Professional Midwifery 5 Analysis To this end, the review of the recorded interview of Nurse X prompts a deeper understanding of the elements leading to the experience. However, in one major area, it was fortunately favorable to Nurse X, who had an in-depth and detailed knowledge of the roles of a child nurse. She has a good academic background and practical experience, which can explain this. First, research literature shows that a deep knowledge of professional roles significantly improves multi-professional communication and coordination (Lei et al., 2019). Nurse X's articulation of the challenges in perinatal mental health care mirrors her theoretical knowledge and personal experiences and adheres to the principles of reflective practice in nursing (Ramani et al., 2019). Another positive outcome was that Nurse X gave a crisp and clear summary of the responsibilities of being a children's nurse in the recorded sessions. She fully articulated the expectations of a child nurse and how they belong to the multiprofessional team. How she presented her collaboration with midwives and her care for pregnant women allowed her audience to realize this fully. Nurse X thus demystified the usually perplexing role of a children's nurse and offered the audience the reality of being in perinatal care. However, some aspects can be improved visually to attract an audience and enhance comprehension. The point properly summarizes Nurse X's communication and presentation, bringing about another step in shaping this viewer's stance. The oral explanations communicated by a nurse in the videotaped interview were obvious and contained important messages. Despite this, they increased audience participation and comprehension by employing more dynamic images. According to Lei et al. (2019), incorporating audiovisual modalities into learning transforms the learning process into a more
Contemporary Professional Midwifery 6 powerful one. Using communication trends and cognitive learning, one can look into limited visual engagement in communication. A possible reason for missing dynamic visual elements could be an understanding failure by Nurse X on how multimedia impacts audience involvement. Emphasizing the essence of mixing visual and auditory channels to improve the whole user experience, Lei et al. (2019). This insight implies that Nurse X's communication strategy can be enhanced by incorporating various forms of multimedia into it to capture the audience's attention and better understanding. That part could be improved, but it gives much suspense before the interview, which is certainly positive. It questions perinatal care, previously regarded as a children's nurse's responsibility. This analytical viewpoint shows that Nurse X's interview identifies some organizational improvements with a view to future strategic direction. The subsequent group discussion strongly impacted the reflective process, going beyond the individual reflection to peer collective reflection. This mutual discussion placed Nurse X's perspectives in the wider landscape of maternal care (Ramani et al., 2019). It stressed collaboration among various professionals as a fundamental element of quality care to expectant mothers, rooted in personal learning experiences and complex interactions between those involved in patient care. These reflections underscored the synergy required between different healthcare professions to address pregnant patients' multifaceted needs effectively. Action Plan The group members' different opinions helped me understand the nuances of such an interview better and appreciate the multifaceted nature of healthcare practitioners' roles. Peers' feedback was a source of introspection to reevaluate my perceptions and responses. Therefore, in the future, I will review the study day lecturer slides and add the learnings from the interview and meeting. This revision will enable later cohorts to learn more effectively and better

Contemporary Professional Midwifery 7 understand what they have learned. During my placement, I will look for opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration through working with different healthcare professionals who will help me understand holistic maternity care. The initiative will continuously occur during my placement by reflecting on the collaborative experiences and their effect on the patient results. Furthermore, I pledge to incorporate reflective practices into my schedule to create a culture of ongoing learning and development. We will schedule monthly meditative sessions where we will get an opportunity to scrutinize the experiences and identify areas for improvement. This action plan shall be validated in peer and mentor reviews and self-assessment during placement reviews. Conclusion The most essential lesson from my first year of Contemporary Professional Midwifery was analyzing Nurse X's interview and subsequent group discussion. Sandra's idea of how nurses and midwives could collaborate defined how MDT should be treated in perinatal care. As a student midwife, this is critical to my success and happiness in this chosen profession. Reflecting on events and comprehending experiences will always aid one's development as a practitioner. The reflective cyclical process has been advantageous and instructive. It has shown me that I should be bold, speak up, and delegate more effectively. When I see others struggle, it is straightforward to take over, even if it is more helpful for everyone to engage and work as a team. "An essential element of continual, evolving midwifery is the need for midwives to critically reflect on their practice to inform and improve care for pregnant women" (Wain, 2019). Contemplation and conversation will promote awareness, empathy, and communication. Reflection regularly encourages personal development and aids in the improvement of knowledge. It is a constant reminder of one's limitations and areas for progress. It is risky not to
Contemporary Professional Midwifery 8 query or seek more information when doing so could improve future outcomes. By being completely present in the position, this mindfulness helps a multidisciplinary healthcare team to strive for the best treatment possible, evolve as persons, and increase client safety.
