DELEGATION PRINCIPLES 2 Delegation Principles 1. Delegation Delegation is the process involving the performance assignment of tasks or activities regarding patiencare, whereas holding the outcome accountability ( Mitty et al. 2010) . The nurse has to delegate tasks and roles to a qualified individual based on policies and job descriptions. 2. Assignment Assignment is the process of distributing work that needs to be partaken by each of the staff members in a given period of work ( Mitty et al. 2010) . The nurse in this concept issues out work towards the qualified personnel. 3. Accountability Accountability is the retrospective review of the action or judgment on the nurse part for which nurses are answerable to others and self for the acts and decisions ( Spriggle, 2009) . After delegating the roles to be played by the delegatee, the nurse will be liable for the actions. 4. Responsibility Responsibility entails the performance liability of the delegated duties in the specified role ( Spriggle, 2009) . In this concept, the nurse has to ensure there is a follow up on the delegatee to perform the task effectively. 5. Delegation Rights Five delegation rights help the nursing practitioners in the delegation decision. Firstly, is the right task where a nurse ought to evaluate the task and determine the safety of its delegation ( Spriggle, 2009) . It entails factors such as having the knowledge as well as skills of performing the task and ways of evaluating failure or success. Secondly, is the right circumstance which involves stability as well as outcome predictability of the patient. The nurse has to decide on
DELEGATION PRINCIPLES 3 delegation after analyzing the circumstances and needs of the patient first. Thirdly is the right person, whereby the nurse responsible for making the delegation decision has to ensure the delegate has demonstrated and possesses appropriate skills as well as a knowledge base for performing the delegated roles. The nurse also has to provide adequate evaluation and supervision for ensuring the proper outcome and safety of the patient. The fourth delegation right is the right communication/directions; this involves the responsibility of the nurse to ensure the delegatee previously documented knowledge base as well as appropriate skills. Also, the nurse has to ensure there is constant communication of the tasks to be undertaken. Lastly is the right evaluation/supervision, which entails the nurse being responsible for outcomes and tasks. The nurse has to receive reports and follow up on the outcomes and tasks in cases there is a failure.
