NU 800 Project Development - Week 3 Discussion Post Responses Thank you, Nakisha, I agree with the concepts that you have posited in your discussion, and the relevance of your topic to the African American community speaks magnitude given the unique challenges and inequities that community continues to face in terms of accessing healthcare. The African American community are at a higher risk of being subjected to racism, discrimination, and other forms of oppression that can negatively affect health their mental health. A significant concern was raised by Kugelmass (2016), that racial minoritized people also experience discrimination by mental health care professionals as evidenced by audit studies showing major difficulties among Black adults in securing mental health appointments. I concur with your point of view that addressing this issue will not only improve mental health for individuals but also advance the principles of equity and justice for that community. M ental health in the African American population is indeed a crisis,   and the view have been expressed that the covid-19 pandemic has worsened mental health illnesses and racial disparities for communities of color in the United States. The pandemic introduced additional factors that likely contributed to the disparity in mental health care for the Black community both in limiting access to mental health care professionals and by removing other forms of coping that may have substituted for mental health care prior to the pandemic. These include religious and spiritual resources, since almost all religious organizations closed their doors which limited engagement. According to Thomeer et al. (2023), the Black churches have historically served an important role in the mental health of Black communities coping with experiences of racism and racialized stress exposure, and the closure of these spaces almost certainly harmed the psychological well-being of this group. Hello Pearle, thank you for broaching this very important issue for your DNP project topic. I agree that cultural norms play a very important role in shaping healthcare decisions within the African American community and the acknowledgement of these norms can have a positive influence in terms of strategy development in patient’s plan of care. Another important point that you mentioned in your discussion is the difficulties in communication and understanding that are encountered between staff and patients because of a deficit in cultural competency. According to Kaihlanen et al. (2019), a lack of cultural understanding increases negative attitudes towards cross-cultural care and affects healthcare professionals’ perceived preparedness to take care of culturally diverse patients. A culturally competent health care system is one that acknowledges the importance of culture, incorporates the assessment of cross-cultural relations, recognizes the potential impact of cultural differences, expands cultural knowledge, and adapts services to meet culturally unique needs. Therefore, cultural competency is recognized as an essential means of reducing racial and ethnic disparities in health care. McCalman et al. (2017) contends that to be able to improve and sustain the cultural competency of healthcare professionals, training should be offered throughout a professional’s career, tailored to consider individual and organizational contexts, and involving key stakeholders in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the programs.
