Report
There are four roles to the APRN title - these include: certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA), certified nurse-midwives (CNM), clinical nurse specialists (CNS), and certified nurse practitioners (CNP). CRNAs provide a full range of anesthesia and pain management services. CNMs are able to provide primary, gynecological, and reproductive health care to those in need. A CNS is able to provide diagnosis and treatment, as well as ongoing management to patients. They are also able to provide expertise and support to RNs who are caring for patients, and can help drive change within large organizations (Blair, 2018). Lastly, Nurse Practitioners can provide primary, acute, and specialty health care services to patients from birth to end of life. NPs can assess, diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries (Blair, 2018). The Certified Nurse Midwife was brought to the US in 1925 by Mary Breckinridge, when she founded the Frontier Nursing Service in eastern Kentucky. The first educational midwifery program was founded in New York in 1931, where registered nurses were able to further their career by being aids to those within the realm of women's health. Certified Nurse Midwives actually started at public health nurses who helped with family care, as well as childbearing and family care (Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, 2010). Nurse midwives only attended home births until the late 1950s, when they were invited into hospitals after the post "baby boom" (Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, 2010). CNMs introduced the idea of family-centered maternity care, contributed to the idea of mother and baby staying in the same room, and also played a role in urging new mothers to breastfeed. CNMs have come a long way, and their career growth is expected to increase by over 40% within the next few years (ANA Enterprise, 2017). ANA Enterprise. (2017, October 19).
