Hello Rachel, I agree with your healthcare issue of the nurse shortage being at an all-time high since the pandemic. Healthcare workers are forced to work in unsafe conditions and patient ratios. Which causes nurses to be unable to provide optimal patient care and achieve the desired outcomes for their patients. "Lack of training for new nursing intakes are the main barriers that affect nursing shortage. Some training barriers are not enough spaces for training, special classroom, dormitories and clinical sites for practice" (Tamata & Mohammadnezhad., 2023). Some hospitals within the region I live have taken this into consideration. For example, a new to practice nurses are assessed with extensive training and given resources to help them during their initial career. This training is Nurse Residency some hospital offers this for the first 12-24 months of practice. Hospitals believe with this extra help; they will be able to decrease the nurse turnover rate of new to practice nurses in a stressful time in healthcare. Heavy workload is also a contributing factor to the nursing shortage. "The nurses believe that the conditions where nurses’ work can have a major influence on their performance and the quality of care provided to patients include “heavy workload”, “lack of workforce” and “unusual working hours” (Tamata et al., 2021). Various nurses throughout the U.S. have addressed this issue either on a local level or national level. Nurses have gone on strike for the safety of patient ratio. In the state of California in 2004 they passed a law that mandates specified nurse to patient ratios. The lack of empowerment has also been noticed to contribute to nursing shortage. "Empowerment in autonomy in staffing ratio decisions considering high volume and acuity levels will lead to less burnout and a strong desire to leave the workforce" (Haddad et al., 2023). it is important for healthcare organizations to empower their employees to want to continue stay within the healthcare facility. For example, hospitals have been to try to have their organization magnet status. Magnet certifications ensure that the facility provides high level of safety, quality, and patient and staff satisfaction. References: Haddad LM, Annamaraju P, Toney-Butler TJ. Nursing Shortage.
