Hello and happy New Year! My name is Regan, and I am currently in my 5 th semester of the family nurse practitioner program, and I am on track to graduate in December of 2024, it is finally the year! I am currently working as a labor and delivery nurse at a busy Atlanta hospital. I love being a labor and delivery nurse and will miss bedside nursing when I transition into my role as a nurse practitioner. When I am not busy with school or work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, and trying new restaurants. I look forward to getting to work with you all this semester and learn from one another. Older adults are the fasting growing population in society and are the largest increase in hospital admissions. They are at the highest risk of acquired disability, cognitive decline, or residential care admission. Due to these multitude of factors, their needs are more complex, and their care should reflect their need for a multidimensional interdisciplinary involvement and the comprehensive geriatric assessment is a cornerstone in geriatric care. The CGA’s is both diagnostic and a therapeutic process (Ellis et al., 2019). There are multiple components of the CGA’s. One component that I would focus on is the advance care preferences (Ward & Reuben, 2022). As nurse practitioners we should ensure that we have had discussion with our patients on their preferences for specific treatments, while they still have the cognitive capacity to make those decisions. This is a in important part of their healthcare management and promotion that they begin thinking about and discussing what their treatment preferences would be. In my approach to the geriatric patient’s physical, it is important to modify aspects of the exam for their comfort level. Ensuring there is adequate room lighting and that they can hear and understand us speaking louder and slower may be necessary (Ward & Reuben, 2022). It is also important to not rush through aspects of the exam and make sure they are sitting in a comfortable position and able to tolerate the position changes necessary for the physical examination, which may require us to move slower. A screening assessment tool that I would utilize during my evaluation of the patient would be a geriatric depression scale. It is important to recognize the symptoms of depression and risks factors that our elderly patients may experience. Depending on the results of the depression screening tool, a referral to psychology or for counseling services may be appropriate for the patient. References Ellis, G., Whitehead, M.
