Public Health: A Science, A Medicine, A Solution
We have all had a public health experience one way or another. Whether it’s to get
immunizations, sexual education at a local high school, access to birth control or even
grief counseling support. Those who work in public health have a multitude of duties
and an obligation to the public, but how would you define it?
Well according to Charles
Edward A. Winslow public health is “the science and art of preventing disease,
prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed
choices of society, organizations, public and private communities and individuals”
(Winslow, 1920). To me public Health is the scientific study of a population’s health
trends and behaviors. One goal for public health corporations like the Institute of
medicine is to fulfill society’s interest in assuring conditions in which people can be
healthy (Institute of Medicine, 2002). I think public health is important because it
provides the public with a strong blueprint needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is
especially important because it not only benefits the person, but society all together.
When people adopt a healthier lifestyle then the cost of Emergency Department visits
will decrease, the cost of Health Insurance won’t be so inflated, and the cost of
pharmaceutical drugs will decrease. Ultimately with realistic expectations a person can
make a few simple changes to their lifestyle and it can benefit not just the healthcare
system but society.
The Public Health approach has been one that has been changed and revised many
times for optimal results and the most accurate information can be given to the masses.

The Public Health approach can be placed into the following categories surveillance,
what is the problem? Risk factor identification, what is the cause? Intervention
evaluation, what works?
and Implementation, how do you do it? Sectors within public
health focus on several factors such as Clinical Care, Determinants, Epidemics, and
health outcomes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). The core
sciences used to achieve public health related goals are as followed Prevention
effectiveness, epidemiology, laboratory, informatics, and surveillance.
Each public
health core science helps us to protect and promote the public’s health by providing
public health personnel with the answered they need illness (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2014). Public Health approaches have always been one of
providing preventative and educational measures, before needing to seek medical
attention.
The importance of Public Health is essential for communities to thrive and to
for the restoration of our healthcare system.
