This disease results in physical troubles that often develop slower, than we think such as, frequent urination, blurred visions, slow-healing sores, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and even areas of darkened skin mainly found within the armpits and neck. Without the proper care and managing of diabetes, the risk for complications increase causing just as much as nerve damage. Nerve damage for diabetic is known as Diabetic Neuropathy. Diabetic Neuropathy is when the nerves that control movement, sensation, and other functions, become affected and begin to slowly damage the physicality of an individuals body. Diabetic Neuropathy has an unknown cause; however, defining which type of neuropathy one may have, depends on the symptoms they experience . Focal Neuropathy, is when each nerve gets affected one at a time. This neuropathy symptoms is solely based upon which nerve is currently being affected. For example, if an individuals thoracic nerves is the nerves being affected today, that person will be experiencing symptoms such as numbness, and chest pain that can mimic angina, heart attacks, or even appendicitis. Additionally, focal neuropathy can cause other symptoms such as, pain the thighs, sever lower back or pelvis pain, aching behind the eyes, inability to focus the eyes, double vision, paralysis on one side of the face, and even hearing problems. Now although this neuropathy is very severe and comes on suddenly, it is also know as the less common type within the diabetic neuropathy group . Diabetic Polyneuropathy (DPN) is the affection of multiple peripheral sensory and motor nerves which brant out from the spinal cord throughout the arms, hands, legs, and feet. It is known for the nerves that branch out from the spine to the feet to be the
nerves that are commonly always affected the most, in an individual suffering from type 2 diabetes. Some of DPNs common causes are unusual sensations (paresthesias) being tingling, burning, or even prickling. Additionally, one can also experience numbness and pain in the hands, legs and feet, weakness of the muscles in the feet and hands, sharp pains or cramps, extreme sensitivity to touch, insensitivity to pain or temperature changes, and evenness of balance or coordination, alongside the difficulties of walking on uneven surfaces. Due to this neuropathy being a sensory problem it increases the risk for injuries involving one ’s feet and toes forming ulcers, wounds, and chronic infections within the feet. Without proper treatment, it can lead towards individuals with diabetes to become an amputee . Cognitive functioning is the multiple mental abilities such as perception, learning, memory, understanding, awareness, reasoning, judgment, intuition, and language. Those with diabetes are known to experience cognitive impairment, which is the decline from the customary cognitive abilities. One of types of cognitive impairments that is said a person with type 2 diabetes often experience are both dementia and Alzheimers. “From 1985 to 2019, 1,710 cases of diabetes and 639 cases of dementia were recorded. For every 1,000 people, examined yearly, the rates of dementia were 8.9 in those without diabetes at age 70” (Harvard. 2021) . Many studies are currently showing that diabetes can lead to the increase risk of inquiring dementia; however, it has yet to be proven on if it is the age which one has obtained diabetes, the reason behind the development of dementia. Wherefore, continuing the investigation on diabetes leading towards dementia, will provide the answers to this cognitive impairment .
Social functioning is a person ’s ability to work, engage in social relationships, attend to self-care, and participating in basic social outings. Type 2 Diabetes over the years has demonstrated its affects superiorly amongst the racial and ethnic minority, lower income population. “American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest rates of diabetes of all racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., followed by Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans” (Oregon Health & Science University) . With fast food and convenience stores that provide junk food to the public, overpowering all healthier alternatives; these social and environmental factors leads this population in inheriting type 2 diabetes rapidly . Emotional functioning examines the expressions and emotions that allow one to function through life. Trying to manage your diabetes is already a major part of your life that you have to dedicate the most time to. “Managing a long-term condition, such as diabetes, can be a major source of anxiety. Experiencing anxiety can affect a person s diabetes self-management” (MedicalNewsToday. 2022) . The complexity of type 2 diabetes varies based on the individual. Most are only accustomed in having to take general medicine while also keeping track of their blood sugar levels. However on the other hand, there are some individuals who have to inject themselves with insulin everyday. Due to its complexity, this condition can result in some affects for that particular person; either if it's being at work or school and experiencing your sugar to drop or even increase abnormally. With the proper care and management, these effects can limit its severity. Once the individual studies and learns how their body operates against this disease, life becomes much more enjoyable.
