In my area one of the vulnerable populations, we see at our local hospital are young
polygamist women. My hospital is about 45 minutes from the Colorado city Arizona border.
This town is known for the polygamy, and Warren Jeffs compound. While some arrests were
made, others continue to live the lifestyle. Many girls are married off spiritually against their
will. Research indicates in polygamous societies women suffer from mental health issues, low
self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and psychiatric disorders (Harel-Shalev & Kook,
2021). When they come into labor and delivery, I notice they do not speak to me, but to the
oldest Matriarch in the room. The other women that accompany the girl answer all my
questions, including questions about care. Some healthcare issues that I have seen come up in
labor and delivery are genetic disorders that appear in the newborn babies. The women are
vulnerable because of the lack of education, books are banned, homeschool is done until about
5
th
grade and then the girls take over cooking and cleaning. A lot of healthcare is done locally
in a clinic in the town, but many times the women are referred to the hospital when the baby is
at risk, or mom’s labor has failed to progress. Most of these women rely on the husband in the
family. Many are uninsured. The fear of outsiders from the community or the fear of
prosecution and tearing the family apart makes getting healthcare, food, education and many
other basic necessities unavailable. As an advanced practice nurse APN, advocating for the
communities around us is important. I would advocate for more healthcare workers going into
the communities to work with the families that live in those underserved communities.
Offering a low or no cost clinic and not relying on lay members of the community to treat
health concerns would help the community. Also building bridges of friendship and trust with
those who are considered outsiders and those from the polygamist community. While
polygamy is still against the law, recent legislation has made it so that in 2020 a bill was
passed that while it is still illegal, it is now an infarction instead of a third-degree felony.
