To do this, I would get the client's primary information, record their presenting problems, their
mental status, symptoms, medical considerations, current medications (if any), and their risk and
safety. Additionally, I would use a psychoeducation approach to help provide my client and their
family with information regarding their diagnosis, course of treatment, and what to expect
overall. (Marschall,2023) Using a psychoeducation approach also allows the MFT to educate
clients and their family members about coping skills that can be useful in managing symptoms.
(Marschall, 2023) If clients and family members understand the importance of coping skills; it
will provide more effective results. (Marschall, 2023)
In my field, assessments, consultations and psychoeducation are important. Assessments are
important because they provide a foundation to help identify presenting problems by asking
questions, assessing behaviors, making evaluations, and obtaining an accurate diagnosis.
(Varghese, et al., 2020) Assessments are also important because it guides an MFT toward the
most effective intervention/treatment plan. (Varghese, et al., 2020) Consultations are important
because they provide a safe way to converse with a professional about any concerns one may
have, however, it may or may not lead to a professional advising one to seek further help. (Carey,
et al., 2022) Also, consultations allow a therapist to determine if they are a good fit for the client,
in terms of being able to provide the type of therapy a potential client may be seeking. (Carey, et
al., 2022) Psychoeducation is important because is used "to ensure basic knowledge and
competence of patients and their relatives about the illness, to provide insight into the illness, to
promote relapse prevention, engaging in crisis management and suicide prevention."(Sarkhel et
al., 2020)
