Discussion 8 The conversation topic for this week was the technicalities of practicing medicine, genetic engineering, and genetically modified creatures. We read several medical examples and in-depth inquiries regarding the ethics of the subject matter based on this issue. Given that many of my classmates and I aim to pursue careers in medicine, I think this week's chapter and the entirety of this class are incredibly crucial for us. This course, in my opinion, enables us to comprehend other people's perspectives and ideas on ethical issues in an unrestricted and uncritical setting. This weeks discussion was more challenging then the previous. In to question 1, we were asked what, in our opinion, constitutes a "moral person" and how we would describe it. To me, being moral implies upholding one's own standards. I concur that, as my classmate Bethel pointed out in her discussion post, we all have various ideas and, generally speaking, different values depending on what is most important to each of us. This reminds me of Matthew 7:12, which says that we may all have different values and various perspectives about what we would want and expressing that is fine. (New American Standard Bible; 1971/1995)I also believe a moral person is someone who, in my opinion, maintains their own personal standards.I consider myself as a moral person because i have moral values. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I believe that reproductive cloning is unethical since it results in the creation of identical lives. Because genetically modified organisms are so novel, it is difficult to say for certain whether they are safe or harmful at this time (Hilbeck et al., 2015).As a doctor, I would encourage the patients to ensure they are well-informed about the advantages and disadvantages of both options before making a choice that they feel most at ease with and that best upholds their principles. GMOs, in my opinion, do have the potential to reduce world hunger, and I think we should continue researching and looking into this to see if there are any potential advantages. I think we should utilize medicine since it works better than natural remedies for illnesses. I think that since we have more knowledge regarding illnesses, we should use medicine to treat individuals as necessary. In this class, I learnt a lot about ethics, but especially I learned how other people's opinions might occasionally alter your own perspective since they may be considering a circumstance in a manner that you have not initially considered. (Waldron, 2022)Romans 12:2 says, "And do not be subject to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect,"
encouraging us to be flexible in our thinking and open to the viewpoints of others.
