Thank you for your post this week. I really appreciate the self-help discussion. Many times, the response to asking why a patient came in for the visit is they could not fix the problem themselves. Sometimes time can resolve an issue, but in other instances, treatment is needed. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies are often best in conjunction with traditional therapy. Anxiety disorders (ADS) are one of the most prevalent mental illnesses with up to 18% of adults in the United States being affected (Aurelus, 2019). ADS are frequently treated with cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Many patients report the symptoms are not completely alleviated using these methods alone. A study by Ng & Jain (2022) using yoga, meditation, vitamins, and applied relaxation in addition to traditional therapies had beneficial effects.
CAM is often referred to as integrative medicine as it integrates the whole being, both biological and psychosocial, into the treatment. Many patients find more pills or appointments
cause increased anxiety. Yoga can be done at any time, alone or in a group, at home or in a specified class. Aurelus (2019) defines yoga as a relaxation technique that creates a balance within the body in a quest to harmonize with oneself. Older patients may be fearful of yoga believing it may be to vigorous for them, but modified yoga has been found helpful and safe (Phoosuwan et al., 2021). Once patients have learned to incorporate yoga into their lives, they have a new self-help tool with proven efficacy.
