Professor and Class, As we learned, the determinants of health encompass a broad range of factors that influence an individual's well-being, which include social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors (Cupp 2020). Understanding and addressing these determinants are crucial for providing holistic and effective healthcare. My week 5 paper is about the STI, syphilis. During my research on this topic, I discovered that homosexual males are at most risk for contracting and suffering from syphilis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). One of the links we were provides learning resources for STI/HIV treatment and prevention for the LGBTQ community. This is a primary prevention strategy and directly correlates to my topic and focuses on education to a population that is at increased risk.
Cultural Competency Provider Self-Assessment Tool (CCPSA) is used to link health care providers directly to the appropriate AETC-NMC HIV cultural competency and training curriculum and resources (Howard University College of Medicine). I find this to be a very cool resource especially after learning of the health inequities in different cultures. In the context of Syphilis, African American and American Indian or Alaska Native populations are being disproportionately affected by syphilis and experiencing higher morbidity and mortality rates due to barriers in healthcare access (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). The CCPSA tool can be used to improve culturally sensitive care in healthcare providers to improve patient outcomes in populations at risk. References
