Chapter Four: Restraint
Case Study Five: Dog with Porcupine Quills
10 points
1.
What would Bucky’s condition have to do with heightened fear or aggression? (1 pt)
Bucky’s condition is likely causing him pain, which typically increases aggression in animals and people. Bucky is likely anticipating more pain to be caused by those trying to help him, so in order to avoid more pain he exhibits more aggressive or fearful behaviors. Bucky also has a history of aggression with the staff, which is likely adding to his fear or aggression. He may have had a painful experience during a previous visit and now anticipates pain, hence being fearful or aggressive during normal visits (Hospital,
2021).
2.
What physical signs or behaviors are exhibited by dogs that are fearful or aggressive? (2 pts)
Dogs that are fearful or aggressive may have dilated pupils, piloerection, ears held down or back, panting, tense lips held back to show teeth, growling, snapping, tense muscles, the dog may freeze, or move frantically, as well as urinate or defecate. Some may also hide and move away from the veterinary staff, or have their tail tucked (Bassert, 2022, pp. 137–139).
3.
What body language should you employ when working with fearful or aggressive dogs? (2 pts)
Dogs exhibiting fearful or aggressive behaviors should be left alone and a new plan of care should be discussed. Oftentimes medication is the best choice of action for both the staff and the patient (Bassert,
2022, p. 137). 4.
What are some mechanical devices or other tools that could be used on dogs for restraint? (2 pts)
Some tools include muzzles, E-collars, tape hobbles and rope leashes, a towel or blanket can be used with small dogs, and rabies poles can be used very cautiously by experienced staff in extreme situations. Sedation is also a good tool to use and increases the safety of the staff and animal, and generally makes a more pleasant visit for both the staff and the patient (Sheldon , 2017 pp 96-105). 5.
Are all of the devices in the above question practical to use when treating Bucky? Which ones would not be practical and why would they be contraindicated? (3 pts)
Muzzles are not a practical choice since there are porcupine quills in his mouth and on his face, the muzzle would not be able to go over his muzzle and the quills in his mouth would not be removable since his mouth is held shut. An E-collar is not appropriate either because it may not be able to be put on due to the quills, and it would not stop him from biting. Bucky is far too big to restrain with a towel or
blanket. A rope lease is also not a good choice in this situation. Since Bucky has a history of being aggressive towards staff and is exhibiting signs of FAS, a leash would not offer enough protection from biting, especially while pulling quills out of him. A rabies pole can be dangerous to an animal as they can strangle themselves. This would also not offer protection while pulling quills from his face, mouth, or front half. Sedation is the best choice in this situation, staff will be able to safely remove the quills from his face, neck, legs, and mouth, Bucky will also have a better experience this way (since he won’t have a clue what’s going on) (Sheldon , 2017 pp 96-105).
