Assignment 5- APPLICATION OF CRISIS THEORY AND RESILIENCY THEORY TO A
CASE STUDY
Dr. Tabitha Brookins
10/2/2023

The crisis can be divided into five stages:
(1) dangerous event, (2) susceptible stage, (3)
triggering factor, (4) active crisis state, and (5) reintegration or crisis resolution phase. Ms. Paula
Cortez's ability to provide for her daughter Maria as well as herself has been impacted by several
life events that she has experienced. Her diagnoses of HIV/AIDS and other illnesses that have
affected her capacity to care for her daughter constitute the "hazardous event" that she is
currently concerned about. Ms. Cortez was undergoing therapy for circulation problems that
resulted in persistent foot ulcers, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS. Ms. Cortez entered the "stage of
vulnerability" when she was given a bipolar disorder diagnosis and started having mental health
issues. Her experiences with weeks-long episodes of mania and the melancholy that ensues have
made her extremely paranoid and noncompliant with taking her medicine as directed. She has
been less able to provide Maria with the necessary care and attention because of this problem.
Due to her growing concerns about her capacity to care for Maria considering her deteriorating
health, Ms. Cortez has started deciding for her son, Miguel, to take on Maria's care if she is
unable to do so. When Ms. Cortez was informed that she was no longer responding to the
hepatitis C medications he had been getting, that became the "precipitating factor" in this
instance. Ms. Cortez has generally disregarded her doctor's advice and failed to take her
medication as prescribed, but this has made her feel helpless and despondent. Ms. Cortez is in a
"state of active crisis" because of several circumstances that have contributed to her deteriorating
health and impaired capacity to care for her daughter. Due to her bipolar disorder diagnosis, her
incapacity to care for Maria, her deteriorating health, and her disregard for medical advice, Ms.
Cortez finds herself in a crisis.

Now that Ms. Cortez is trying to raise her little daughter on her own with little assistance,
she is faced with a predicament that makes her feel hopeless and powerless.
(Mirabito, 2017, p. 120). The fact that Ms. Cortez has a place to live with her daughter,
specialists who will support her during her diagnosis, her perseverance and desire to provide for
Maria, and her son's emotional support are among her assets. The federal and state assistance that
Ms. Cortez currently receives includes Medicaid, WIC, the federal Supplemental Nutrition
Program for Women, Infants, and Children, Supplemental Security Disability Insurance,
Miguel's father David Cortez, additional help from her job, her passion for painting and drawing,
her fluency in both Spanish and English, and her son Miguel and daughter Maria. The
perseverance exhibited by Ms. Cortez is evident in her desire to take care of Maria by making
sure she has a secure residence, the necessary medical care, and permanent care in case her
health prevents her from being able to support Maria. Due to medical issues that keep her from
being able to care for her kid, Ms. Cortez has reached a crisis and vulnerable point.
As a social worker, I will step in to help her move through crisis theory's reintegration
stage. In Paula's case, I would think about providing thorough outpatient clinic care and
demonstrating good faith by helping her to take her medicine on schedule (Harvey, 2016).
Without a doubt, this intervention can help her become more resilient, which is something that
her bipolar disorder requires. She would receive care from a social professional in an effort to
develop a unique, innovative method that would enable her to disclose her sexual relationship
and discuss ways to improve her unfavorable situation. Passing the suicidal assessment as a
mother is crucial for Paula since it lowers the risk for both her and her five-year-old child
(Harvey, 2016). My goal as Paula's social worker, would be to alleviate her suffering associated
with her physical and mental health. That is a blatant sign that Paula is getting the excellent

treatment she is due on her path to empowerment, which expedites her recovery. In my capacity
as the social worker, I should make sure I have access to a social work-related policy so I can
build a strong rapport with Paula. Paula needs ongoing care and assistance to improve her
physical and mental health. This will help to assess her client empowerment (Greene, 2017). In
the end, applying crisis theory and resilience theory to Paula Cortez's situation will improve her
health. Paula's health will improve if she can use crisis intervention procedures, which are made
possible by the use of crisis theory. Simultaneous use of these two theories helps alleviate the
client's stress, guilt, and anxiety while offering emotional support. Resilience theory will be
crucial in shielding her from the negative impacts of experiencing hardship.
