MEDICAID Health care coverage for low-income families
SOCIAL PROBLEM Low-income families not being able to afford health insurance. “The constellation of health services for the poor was expanded through Medicaid” (Segal, 2020 pg.41)
Power Imbalance or Struggle People who rely on Medicaid “are by definition low earners, they are not going to be in a position to bring in additional revenue for medical practices. They will have a decreased financial ability to opt for elective treatments and may not be able to pay for top brand drugs or other medical aids”(checkpointehr.com) “Medicaid policies have failed to resolve racial health disparities throughout the programs history” (Nolen 2020. sec.1). For example: Diseases and conditions that have disproportionately affected certain races should be key health priorities for Medicaid programs and should not require prior authorization for treatment of diseases. (Nolen,2020. sec.5)

Public Reaction “The Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion expanded Medicaid coverage to nearly all adults up to 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level”(KFF.org, 2022) “ 39 states have adopted the Medicaid Expansion and 12 states have not adopted this expansion”(KFF.org, 2022) “Children accounted for 37.5 percent of Medicaid enrollees in 2019 which was the largest share of all enrollment groups”(CHFS.KY.GOV,2022)
Policies, Public Laws, or Administrative Rules “The program launched and legitimated a major role for the Federal Government in funding health care for part of the population- a role that had been controversial. It has spared millions of vulnerable citizens economic anxiety, avoidable pain, and premature death. It has encouraged major innovations in health care policy”(Brown, 1996) The objective of Medicaid is to provide health coverage to low- income people that otherwise would not be able to afford any type of health coverage. Medicaid is administrated by states, according to federal requirements. Medicaid is funded by both the state and federal government. (Medicaid.gov)
