My work Identify the Population Health concern you selected: The opioid crisis and Overdose in the United States. Describe the Population Health concern you selected and the factors that contribute to it.: Over 130 people die daily from opioid overdose in the United States, per the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This crisis has been a concern, affecting our communities and globally. Over $78 billion has been paid from the monetary funds each year for therapy, expenses due to criminal matters, and health care to fund addiction treatment. (NIH,2019). According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, the crisis started in the 1990s. Overprescribing started this, which began to abuse and addiction. This has caused the present opioid crisis. (CDC, 2018). Presidents: President Obama: The Obama administration's agenda aimed at starting methods includes prescription drug supervision—the practice of taking back drugs at local pharmacies or police stations was encouraged. According to white house .gov, this ministration also guided treatment for people addicted to drugs. (Whitehouse.gov). President Trump: The Trump administration's agenda is directed at strict laws starting from the route of the problem, joining forces with the president, and breaking down on drug traffickers, and including other presidents of other countries to cease the trafficking of drugs departure into the USA. The administration aimed at firmer border control to prevent drugs coming from different countries and laws to prevent opioid abuse. The Trump administration also aimed at addressing the problem by treating individuals with addiction. President Biden: The Biden administration expressed concerns about the drug overdose epidemic rising to a high record. This administration aims to introduce a new method to stop the crisis. And make Balochistan easy to access. Said president Biden, “This Strategy goes after two significant drivers of the opioid epidemic: untreated addiction and drug trafficking,). President Trump: In October 2019, an Additional $1.6 million was distributed throughout 12 states through 13 countries with excessive drug abuse movements. Another $13 million was given to support law enforcement in completing several new programs to address the drug crisis. (White House.gov). Summary of proposals emitted from the white Trump’s budget also seeks $21 billion to commit toward structure expenditure and $23 billion to go to security, involving his legendary border wall. President Bident: In March 2023, In an effort planning to beat the dry addiction epidemic, President Biden announced his FY 2024 budget asking Congress, calling for a “historic investment of $46.1 billion for National Drug Control Program
agencies”. (Whitehouse.gov). The FY24 budget request remains the Administration’s trend of calling for histrionic funds regarding the overdose crisis caused by fentanyl. It signifies a $5.0 billion rise from the FY22 request and a $2.3 billion additional over the FY23 enacted level. The FY24 funds also involve an increase in financing for forces to decrease the supply of criminal drugs such as fentanyl and others and end drug trafficking. This also incorporates increased support to assist the growth of recovery services, prevention, and treatment. (Whitehouse.gov). Why is this agency the most helpful? : President Obama: The Obama administration noticed that mental health challenges were causing issues in the addiction crisis. The agency dependable to focus on the epidemic would be the Mental Health and substance abuse services administration. The administration would teach people about therapy treatment and prevention (SAMHSA.Gov,2019). Trump: The Trump administration has approached the border patrol more strictly. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) would be the agency to follow to oversee any form of opioids, large or small quantities, illegally coming into the country. (DEA.GOV,n.d). Biden: President Biden's administration focused on prevention and treatment, also on the growing availability of Substance use illnesses and essential mental health services. CDC would be the agency responsible for it. The CDC would educate on the incidence and dangers of fentanyl and other mixed drugs—also the significance of naloxone as a lifesaving tool. Educate where to find treatment resources, the recovery, and the importance of lowering the stigma.(CDC2021). Who would you choose to be the: President Obama: Young people ages 18 -34 are seen to be the population who are most affected by this crisis. There are individuals at risk of repeating the mistake of persons before them. President Trump: Opioid addiction is a problem globally. This crisis affects the lives of ordinary people and well-known people such as celebrities. Bradley Cooper would be a great candidate to represent. Over the years, he speaks about how he was addicted and misusing in his late 20s and early 30s. He also says how his life and career thrived after recovering from his addiction. (By Emily Kirkpatrick 2022). As one of the biggest celebrities, people would pay attention and try to seek treatment to get to their recovery. President Biden: Dr. Holly Geyer would be an excellent champion to represent and lead our community and globally in reducing the addiction crisis. Dr. Geyer believes strongly in advocating for individuals and educating how to safer use, store, and dispose of opioids. “Dr. Geyer, an addiction medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic.” (Dr Geyer). She continues to do studies and has seen the media teach and
talk about ending the addiction crisis; she also has a new book,” Ending the Crisis.” (Dr. Geyer, 2023). Explain how each of the president administrations approached the issue: President Obama: The administration made it a constraint to extend health assistance to include substance abuse and complete accessibility to the opioid antidote naloxone for life-saving measures. The implementation efforts involved breaking illegal opioid suppliers and preventing doctor-shop attempts. Also involving, medical specialists and other sponsors engage in obtaining strategies for chronic pain with opioid prescribing.
