Who is it for?
This service is mainly for people aged 65 years and over.
Examples of Home Support Program Services
There are different kinds of services to help older people do daily activities. Some examples
are:
•
transport to appointments (support workers can take you to your appointments)
•
help for household work like cleaning, washing clothes
•
personal care-help with getting dressed
•
help with meals (e.g. Meals on Wheels delivers frozen or chilled meals to older people)
•
social activities like people visiting you or taking you out (e.g. Neighbourhood Visit
program)
•
help with taking medicines
•
help with gardening (e.g. mowing the lawn)
How can you find more information about these services?
You can phone the My Aged Care Contact Centre on 1800 200 422 between 8am and 8pm

Home support enquiry
Dear Sir/Madam
I’d like to enquire about home support services for my parents.
My parents are living in their own home and like to be independent. My father’s eyesight is
failing, so he has given up his licence. My mother cannot drive, and they don’t live near
public transport.
I’d like to know how the transport services could help them. I read they can be taken to a
doctor’s appointment, but can they get a lift to their local shopping centre?
They have very few friends and have lost contact with their friends overseas. So could you
tell me how Neighbourhood Aid could assist them?
Mum loves her garden, and dad is a keen gardener too. However they now have knee and
back problems, so their garden is neglected. What type of gardening help could they have?
Finally how can I arrange for home support to assess them?
Thank you for your assistance.
Regards
Daniela Kovacevic

Answer choices
Put an X next to your answer
a.

2.8 Read about compound sentences
Daniela uses conjunctions to join clauses together in her email. She uses conjunctions
such as:
and, but, or
and
so
. When we join two clauses with a conjunction we call it a
compound sentence. This means the sentence has 2 parts or clauses. Each part or clause
makes sense by itself. Example from 2.7 “Read an email to enquire”:
•
My parents are living in their own home.
•
My parents like to be independent.
We can join these 2 sentences into 1 sentence:
My parents are living in their own home and like to be independent. (1 sentence)
2.9 Grammar - Conjunctions
1. The following sentences are from 2.7 “Read an email to enquire”.
Underline the conjunction in each sentence.
a.
My parents are living in their own home and like to be independent.
b.
My father’s eyesight is failing, so he has given up his licence.
c.
My mother cannot drive, and they don’t live near public transport.
d.
I read they can be taken to a doctor’s appointment, but can they get a lift to their local
shopping centre?
e.
They have very few friends and have lost contact with their friends overseas.
f.
Mum loves her garden, and dad is a keen gardener too.
g.
However they now have knee and back problems, so their garden is neglected.

Re: Home support information
Message
Dear Daniela
Thank you for your enquiry regarding support services for your parents. Please see
suggested home support services listed below:
1.
Transport services:
These services can assist your parents to get to the hospital
or doctors’ surgery for their medical appointments or tests. Support workers can
also help to take them to other appointments such as eye or hearing tests.
2.
Neighbourhood Aid:
Neighbourhood Aid can provide social activities for your
parents. In some areas a community bus can be arranged to take them to local
seniors’ centres. Volunteers can visit your parents to give them company.
3.
Gardening services:
The Green Thumbs group are volunteers who can provide
help to keep your parents’ garden and lawn tidy. This includes mowing the lawn,
pulling out weeds and general gardening work.
To access assistance, your parents will need to register through My Aged Care. They
can call 1800 200 422 and talk with My Aged Care staff who can register them over the
phone. It’s easy for them, and they just need their Medicare Card ready.
For more information on registration go to:
