Class and Dr. K, Prior to viewing the AETC-NMC website and completing the cultural competency provider self-assessment tool (CCPSA), I felt confident in my knowledge and skills as a medical professional caring for patients from different backgrounds and identities. Paying attention to one’s own cultural awareness means to examine one’s prejudices and biases of other cultures. While I was answering the questions to the assessment I started to feel less and less certain of my knowledge, especially as a healthcare professional. The goal and outcome for the AETC-NMC CCPSA tool is to strengthen cultural competency skills while making them more attentive to patient cultural health beliefs (AETC-NMC, n.d.). Through the assessment tool, AETC-NMC has made outstanding discoveries that show the need for resources and providing education on culturally appropriate HIV training nationwide (AETC-NMC, 2022). America is more diverse than ever before and APRN’s need to provide culturally appropriate care (Debiasi & Selleck, 2017). APRNs need to be cognizant of cultural competency and health inequalities individuals may face in the LGBTQIA+ communities. The National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Centers mission is to address and eliminate health disparities, improve the quality of care, and provide training to health care providers in regard to the LGBTQIA+
communities (National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center, n.d.). The LGBTQIA+ community has gained visibility over the new but unfortunately there is little improvement of their health care needs (Radix & Maingi, 2018). The discrimination in healthcare and lack of trained providers has contributed to health disparities within the LGBT community (Radix & Maingi, 2018).
