Hello Class
The Black community has made significant contributions to social, racial, and economic justice, but true
social justice will not be achieved until mental health disparities are addressed. Mental health is crucial
for overall physical health and satisfaction, but the Black community faces increased mental health
concerns, including anxiety and depression. This is due to lack of access to culturally responsive mental
health care, prejudice, racism, and historical trauma. The Black community's intersection of racism,
classism, and health inequity exacerbates their mental health needs. Economic insecurity and related
experiences like violence and criminal injustice further compound mental health disparities. Research
indicates that the adult Black community is 20% more likely to experience serious mental health
problems, such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Vance, 2019).
What would you do if a family member or friend were displaying symptoms and
behaviors that could be identified as that psychiatric illness or disorder?
If my loved one shows signs of mental illness, I would try to have an open and honest discussion
with him or her about my concerns. Those Individuals still have an identity, and they still have a
voice.
We can help our friend or family member by
recognizing the signs of mental health
problems and connecting them to professional help
. By talking to those friends and family about
mental health problems can be an opportunity to provide information, support, and guidance that
they surely need. I would say to them that
“
They are not alone” and “I'm here for you.”
What are some of the ways you could help support them?
This support provides a network of practical and emotional help.
Learn more about the signs and
symptoms of different mental illnesses. It is good to learn more about how treatments work so
that you know what side affects you may see, when to look for improvements and which ones to
look for first.
We play an important role in helping someone who’s not feeling well feel less
alone and ashamed. I think that we should let them know that they are not to blame for their
illness, even they may feel that they are, or may be getting the wrong message from others. I
would want to help by encouraging hope.
What type of service would best assist someone struggling with your selected disorder?
For anxiety or depression, there are crisis hotlines available such as
he Samaritans 24-Hour
Crisis Helpline at (877) 870-4673 (HOPE) or the SAMHSA's National Helpline at 800-662-
4357. There is also psychotherapy in which explores thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and seeks
to improve an individual's well-being. This treatment paired with medication is the most
effective way to promote recovery for our loved ones or family members.
Are there any risks involved in assisting them?
Yes, by us providing
care to the individuals with depression, anxiety or other disabling
conditions put us at risk
. The emotional, mental, and physical health problems that arise from
complex caregiving situations often strains the caring them. We also may start to experience
fatigue, anxiety, and depression as well because of the stress that comes with worrying about that
individual. This at times could leave me feeling powerless as anger or irritation may occur.
