2. Bill Selection: The bill that I chose is from North Carolina and is a bipartisan bill from district 8, sponsored by senator William Rabon (NC S3 | 2023-2024 | Regular Session, 2023). The Bill number is NC senate bill 3 titled, “NC compassionate Care Act”. This bill allows patients who suffer from a debilitating disease to use cannabis for medical purposes. This bill aims to protect the patient and their doctor from criminal or civil consequences regarding the use of cannabis for medical purposes in North Carolina. 1. This article is interesting to me due to the popularity of cannabis use across America and the legalization of cannabis use. I have also administered cannabinoids to some of the patients I care for and have seen their effects. I have heard stories about how beneficial it can be for some patients who are diagnosed with Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Disease but have not conducted research on it myself. This gives me the opportunity to research the facts and importance of this treatment and if bills like the NC Compassionate Care Act should be put into other state’s legislations. 2. It is also interesting to me because I feel that many older adults could benefit from using cannabinoids since I mainly work with the geriatric population, but due to the stigma many providers do not prescribe it and geriatric patients also may be reluctant. Based on the study conducted by Tumati et al. (2022), the primary reason older adults used medical cannabis in Cananda was to reduce pain and manage oncological and neurological symptoms. This article also states, “The majority of older adults reported improvements in pain… sleep… and mood… with 35.6% reporting use of a reduced dose of opioids and 19.9% a reduced dose of benzodiazepines” (Tumati et al., 2022, para. 3). There are other populations and reasons of use for medical cannabis. It will also be interesting to determine how beneficial medical cannabis really is and if more legislation regarding cannabis use will be put into legislation.
