VeggieRx Grant Proposal for Carminati Elementary School in Tempe, Arizona
Adam Gad
HEP 466: Health Promotion Management and Administration
Fall 2023 Session B
Statement of Need
Food insecurity is not having access to enough food, or food that is adequate in nutrition.
In the United States alone food insecurity is a big problem that many folks in the country face.
More than ninety percent of U.S. households were secure of nutritional food throughout 2021
and ten percent of U.S. households were insecure (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2023).
Almost thirteen million households occasionally struggled in 2023 to buy enough food to fulfill
the needs of their entire family due to financial reasons. In 5.1 million households the normal
food intake of members in the household was affected, therefore food intake was reduced
somewhat throughout the year due to lack of financials or not being able to find proper food
resources.
There are many health risks that are related to food insecurity like heart problems,
anemia, birth defects, and anxiety (Gundersen and Ziliak, 2014). In Arizona a little over 700
thousand people were facing food insecurity and a little less than 200 thousand of those people
were under the age of 18. This is a major problem since this statistic includes children under the
federal working age. These children have no resources and according to the article (Hunger in
Arizona, n.d.) one in six children face hunger in this state alone. Obviously, Arizona with these
statistics shows how big of a problem food insecurity is here. In the year 2020, 14.1 percent of
people in Arizona lived under the poverty line.
The goal of the VeggieRx program is to help address food insecurity and promote
healthier foods. This program will have a great impact on the children at Carminati Elementary
School. The Carminati Elementary School is in Tempe, Arizona at
4001 S McAllister Ave. This
school in located in a nice neighborhood and has access to healthy food restaurants in the area.
There also are many fast-food restaurants on the other hand which can make it hard to choose.
There is Culvers down the street from the school, which is the closest restaurant. A few blocks
down from the Culvers there is a Burger King. Next to Burger King there is a D Lite Healthy on
The Go restaurant which is rather expensive for the food you receive. The nearest grocery store
is a Fry’s located 3.2 miles away from the school. These are community factors that have an
impact on food security because of the increase in unhealthy food options compared to healthier
options. Carminati elementary school has roughly 386 students with 146 students being
Hispanic, 20 Asian, 34 African American, 90 white, and 14 being other races. Out of all 386
students only 186 qualify for free lunch and none qualify for the reduced lunch. The VeggieRX
program is a must have here because children need to learn about making healthier food choices
now so as to not affect their future. The VeggieRX program has also shown a decrease in food
insecurity among other schools who have gone through the VeggieRX program.
