“Payer mix (healthcare) is the percentage of revenue that comes from private insurance
companies, self-pay patients, or government insurance programs such as Medicaid and
Medicare” (2021). Payer mix is important because it impacts the revenue and cash flow of
healthcare organizations. A huge factor of payer mix that I found in healthcare is the telehealth
implementation. The authors state, “Rather than bringing patients to the resources,
telemedicine enables a strategy of bringing the resources to the patient. Potential benefits
include enabling patients to receive medical care closer to their home and, simultaneously,
enabling hospitals to provide a level of resource to patients that would not have otherwise been
possible. In doing so, smaller hospitals may be able to retain more patients and maintain a
higher census and more favorable financial status as well” (2022). This backing up the fact that
payer mix is very important for cash flow and implementing telehealth will keep hospitals
stocked with patients, especially for rural areas, while also increasing or maintaining the
revenue for these hospitals. This will also help keep the payer mix spread out evenly. Payer mix
affects healthcare marketing because it gives the bottom line for the budget in marketing. Due
to payer mix affecting revenue of a healthcare system, the marketing budget is affected by the
amount of money they make. To be successful it is important to keep the mix spread, but to
target your higher value clients. The ones who are going to bring more profit to the practice.
Typically, self-pay is going to be the highest and then private insurance being the second. You
will need to target those with ads that get their attention, but also keeping those others in the
mix as well to keep it broad. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states, “Or do you not know that your body is
a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you
were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” This tying into this discussion board in
my opinion because God talks about our bodies being temples and that we are to keep them
healthy and use them to glorify him. The best way is to see a doctor when we are sick and have
it taken care of.
