5-2 Journal
Katelyn Welshonse
An article published by the National Library of Medicine looked at the experiences of adoptive
parents within a preschool environment. This included Lesbian, gay, and heterosexual adoptive
parents. Within the preschool era there is different challenges that are being faced, especially
when it comes to lesbian and gay parents. There is often more questioning when it comes to
family relations at pickup. The different family dynamics is evident even within adoption.
Though Lesbian and Gay couples are adopting more it is still more popular in heterosexual
couples. Another thing that has changed within adoptions is how often adoptions are now open
instead of closed. Families that are giving up their children still want to know about them as they
grow and as they age. This can include actual contact with the child or even just photos and letter
updates. The family form is still idolized with the main priority being heterosexual couples being
adoptive parents.
When looking into grandparent adoption we also have to look at different cultures. For instance
in some Chinese communities it is very common that the Grandparents will raise their
grandchildren. This is different from the American culture where grandparents end up with their
grandchildren for different circumstances. Often when a parent is found unfit to be a parent the
child will be taken by child protective services and they will look for family to take the child
before going right for foster care. When parents pass away this is often another way that children
will end up with their grandparents.
My little sisters step sisters ended up being raised by their grandmother after their parents were
killed. When the girls were young their father passed away in a motorcycle accident, about 7
years later their mother was also killed in a car accident. Due to their step father being in prison
they were sent to live with their grandmother that they thankfully had a good relationship with.
Different circumstances will turn out this way.
