In the discussion, several ideas and experiences were shared regarding the difficulties in
discussing gender and sexuality, as well as strategies to promote cultural responsiveness. A
notable aspect that resonated with me was the significance of engaging in self-reflection and
evaluating biases. Dr Kim Kick emphasized the need to recognize and question one's
preconceived notions, where they come from, and whether they are serving a person's personal or
professional growth. This idea is crucial because self-awareness and challenging one's beliefs
can lead to greater understanding, empathy, and cultural responsiveness (
Kuper
et al., 2022). Another notable point was Dr Chris Cotten's suggestion to engage in exposure and interaction
with individuals from diverse communities. Dr Chris emphasized that meeting and befriending
people from different backgrounds is a powerful way to reduce anxiety, dispel stereotypes, and
develop empathy. We can effectively promote a culture of understanding, inclusivity, and mutual
respect by encouraging personal interactions and embracing humanizing experiences (
Marsiglia
et al., 2021).
During the Privilege for Sale activity, I experienced frustration due to the limitation of choosing
only four items from the list, as there were numerous rights that I believe should be universal
regardless of gender or sexuality. I based my selections on my values regarding family and
financial security. This activity provided me with valuable insight into the significant privilege
enjoyed by those in heterosexual and binary gender identities, highlighting the disparities faced
by marginalized LGBTQ individuals. It served as a transformative experience, broadening my
understanding of the potential legal, social, and financial barriers that LGBTQ clients may
encounter. As a result, I now possess a better understanding of the challenges they may face and
feel equipped to assist them in navigating these issues effectively.
One challenge in selecting privileges is the limited budget. With only $400, i face difficulty in
making real decisions and determining which privileges hold the highest priority for purchase.
This financial constraint serves as a reminder that many privileges are not easily accessible or
affordable for LGBTQ individuals.
Becoming an ally to the LGBTQ+ community is a continuous journey that requires several steps.
It involves cultivating self-awareness regarding personal biases and attitudes, educating oneself
about their culture, and actively supporting legislation that safeguards their rights (
Kuper et al.,
2022
). Being an ally means consistently advocating for the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals
and engaging in personal growth even when others may not be aware (
Perales, 2022). It entails
practicing allyship in all areas of life, extending beyond the boundaries of the LGBTQ+
community.

To effectively support the LGBTQ community in social work and allyship, it is crucial to
cultivate cultural competence, advocate for their rights, establish safe spaces, collaborate with
LGBTQ organizations, offer education and support, actively engage as allies, and engage in self-
reflection to address biases and privilege ( One insight that gained from this activity is the accumulation of small and seemingly mundane
privileges that non-LGBTQ individuals often take for granted. The list highlights a range of
privileges that, when absent, can significantly affect LGBTQ individuals' lives, relationships, and
overall well-being. It highlights the significance of equality and inclusivity, as well as working
toward a society in which these benefits are available to all persons, regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity
