Personal Statement
I was naturally drawn to the medical field because of my mother. My mother is a registered nurse with over 30 years of experience in hospital acute care settings and nursing home care. I vividly remember the discussions surrounding her everchanging experiences, and how her passion for helping others kept her going. That same interest in healthcare translated to me when I began working in the department of radiology during my undergraduate years. During this career experience, I was introduced to more fields of the healthcare system that were much different from the typical career opportunites that came to mind when thinking of healthcare. This prompted me to researched available fields of study at my school that would afford me the opportunity to work in healthcare without having to become a nurse or attend medical school. I quickly landed upon the field of Medical Laboratory Science and instantly became intrigued. After obtaining my degree and completing the board certification exam, I began my career. I have been extremely fortunate to serve in many different roles throughout my career, and have even aquired a Master’s in Business Administration that has helped me better understand the operations of laboratory services and the healthcare system in general. While I remain committed to the promise of science, I have come to realize that I am far more invigorated by the quality of care that we as healthcare workers provide. My educational interest in Healthcare Quality and Safety resides on better understanding and improving the overall quality of healthcare services to ensure that patients and consumers get the best care possible. Specifically, in the field of laboratory services, quality improvement is a constant topic for all clinical laboratory departments to assess. Managing laboratory testing is a complex process that is extremely critical for patient and employee safety. Also, laboratory testing errors are most likely escalate to patient harm when they occur. One topic I am interested in exploring is “The Reduction of Errors in Reference Laboratory Sendout Testing”. Currently, we experience a tremendous amount of cancellations for reference lab specimens due to various factors including, inaccurate test ordering, loss of specimens, and insufficient sample volumes. Additionally, the communication processes that are in place lack real time efficiency for tracking location
of specimens once transferred to a reference laboratory. Obtaining a graduate certificate in Healthcare Quality and Safety, will enable me to be successful in managing healthcare delivery systems, prevention outcomes, and the policy landscape of laboratory medicine and the entire healthcare system. I intend to
gain knowledge and skillsets that will directly effect quality improvement and safety initiaties within in health care facilities in general and within our organization.
