Field Instructor’s Comments
Julio: I was admitted to Lincoln Hospital for two weeks and then to Brunswick Hospital for two weeks of observation. SWI: Could you please tell me
why you were hospitalized? Julio: It all started with a car accident I had. SWI: Tell me more about how everything started with the car accident. Julio: When I was in the accident, the impact caused me
to feel detached from my body, and I haven't been the same since. SWI: Could you tell me a little
bit more about your I found the conversation interesting, and hearing about Julio's perspective was insightful. Julio first gave the sense that he did not want to discuss his mental health difficulties with me. Julio appeared to be attempting to persuade me that there was nothing wrong with him. After
I explained how I understood Julio's spiritual encounter, I believe he felt comfortable, able to interact, and bond.
Julio's intersectionality (cultural background, gender, age, and religious views) is considered to see how it affects his denial defense mechanism. Julio appears to require a sense of safety and security before expressing his concerns. Julio's hesitancy caught my attention at first. He
seemed to be looking for words to express his feelings. He came to a halt briefly while
communicating. He didn't make eye contact with me until he questioned my perception of his encounter. Active, reflective listening as well as assertiveness were essential. Julio also stated that

you hear laughter? Julio: It was the devil's blast of
laughing. I'm not sure whether you understand what I'm saying. SWI: I see what you're saying. Julio: His objective was to injure me in order to prevent me from fulfilling God's plan for my life. SWI: What is God's plan for your life? Julio: I was in a car accident, but the automobile was unharmed save for a bent bar behind the grill. SWI: Could you tell me a little
bit more about your experience? How did you end up in the hospital? Julio: I had this extraordinary encounter with God, and since then I have not been myself. Even my fiancé stated, "I don't

preaching. I was reminded of Jesus. I unexpectedly received a call from Lincoln Hospital requesting a home visit. I suppose my best friend had must called them because it was the day after he told me "You are not yourself" that I was acting weird. A social worker came to my house and asked me a series of personal questions before inviting me to
meet with her for more information. I had no idea they
would keep me in the hospital.
SWI: What happened at the hospital?
Julio: They took my vitals, which were abnormal. They said I shouldn't be living because of my high blood pressure. They then admitted me to the psychiatric unit for observation. schizophrenia. That's what they say, but I don't believe it. SWI: Did they give you any medicine? Julio: They did prescribe me Abilify. SWI: So, Brunswick Hospital referred you here for mental health services. Julio: I suppose. SWI: How are you feeling right now? Julio: Everything is fine. I just want to be compliance with them, but I'm fine overall. SWI: Is there anything more you'd like to work on in your life? Is there anything else that
bothers you? No, Julio. Uh. The only problem is that I lost my work during those 15 days in the hospital, and I'm getting older. I’m 60. I'd want to apply for Supplemental Security Income. SWI: That is something we can help you with.
Summary Paragraph
Summarize your thinking about the interview you have just recorded. How did you handle the interview? How did the client(s) respond to you? Were your objectives achieved? What will be the focus of your future work?
Julio, a 60-year-old Hispanic male, was recommended for mental health services by Brunswick Hospital. Julio was diagnosed with schizophrenia disease (F20.9) and was given the medication Abilify. Julio is hesitant to reveal his diagnosis. He expresses his disbelief
in his situation and seeks phrases to persuade the recipient of his viewpoint. Julio appears to require a sense of protection and comfort before opening up and disclosing his personal understanding of his mental illness. He didn't look at me until he questioned my interpretation of his encounter. Active, introspective listening and assertiveness were necessary during interacting with Julio.
