In order to remain an innovative leader in the healthcare field and to respond to healthcare reform during this point and time, Johns Hopkins created a six-part strategic plan for fiscal year 2014-2018. These parts consist of people, biomedical discovery, patient and family centered care, education, integration, and performance. The three parts of this plan that I think would influence my chosen organization, Whittaker Memorial, would be people, integration, and performance. People – Attract, Engage, retain, and Develop the World’s Best People For Johns Hopkins’ strategic plan, the ‘people’ portion of the plan includes goals of investing and rewarding healthy lifestyles, creating a culture of diversity and inclusion, implementation of fair and clear rewards reflecting the scope of work, recruiting, engaging, and retaining innovative leaders and a flexible workforce, and creating pathways to recruit and reward great clinicians throughout the organization. (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2018) For Whittaker Memorial, this would be very beneficial to their success. This would definitely help the organization escape the public hospital stigma since they would gain the reputation of a hospital that trains and keeps the very best employees. Patients want to go where they think the
best doctors and nurses are.
Integration – Become the Model for an Academically Based, Integrated Healthcare Delivery and Financing System
The goals JHM included with this portion of the plan were to achieve global recognition from the design and implementation of an innovative care delivery and financing model and implementation of the required elements of the newly defined integrated systems. (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2018) If Whittaker Memorial also implemented this strategy, it would also help to not only improve the reputation of the hospital, but also to improve the hospital’s financial status.
Performance – Create Sustainable Financial Success and Implement Continuous Performance Improvement
The goals that JHM provided with the performance section of their strategic plan are
to ensure that all financial operations, results, and performance indicators support the strategic priorities, identify new sources of revenue and expand existing ones as
well as implement operating efficiencies that are committed to reducing costs of healthcare, and establish a transparent financial reporting system that is able to be viewed and understood by all parties. (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2018) This one is especially important for Whittaker to try and implement as well, since the facility is in financial trouble. Whittaker needs to take steps to be able to bring in consistent revenue and continuously improve the performance of its system as a whole in order to continue succeeding financially.
