Strengths 1) Through our vision we want to make the community aware that our goal is to make quality cancer care affordable for all. 2) My oncology practice is physician owned, and prides itself with convenient care as there are 14 locations throughout our region. 3) Able to leverage our connections in the community to assist patients with health-related social needs outside of cancer care. 4) In relation to our competitors, my practice focuses on value-based care. This allows us to help all patients in need. 5) With both Medical and Radiation Oncology, an imaging center, and a mobile MRI, we can provide a great deal of scans needed for the management of cancer care. 6) Our physicians have relationships at many hospital locations that can allow a patient to go where is best for them and their insurance plan. 7) Ensuring that our patient’s best interests are at the core of every decision that we make is the foundation on which we manage our company. 8) In more recent years, we have expanded into the more rural surrounding area, making sure cancer treatment is available to all. 9) To ease the patient’s nerves, we also have an established specialty pharmacy making it easier for patients to pick up physician entered prescriptions. Opportunities 1) Increased costing in drugs make it harder and harder to provide the best and most cost- effective cancer regimen to a patient. 2) The city in which I live is a large healthcare city with many oncology practices linked to major health systems, proving that we are the best option can be difficult. 3) As pricing continues to increase, revisiting our reimbursement may be a good idea, but may cause more harm than good. 4) Generating less of a profit on new and higher costing drugs, as it takes a few months for insurance companies to adjust and cover new therapies. 5) As we currently have this outsourced to another organization, managing pharmacy contacts ourselves may lead to better reimbursement for the specialty pharmacy. 6) While we have access to a large amount of data, creating relationships with organizations that can make that data more productive. Weaknesses 1) Further developing our relationships with home health and end of life care, as we currently do not have a process set in place. 2) Creation of a process or program to address various social determinates of health and further assist our patients. 3) Employee turnover at various clinic locations is high, maintaining a solid workforce could greatly benefit the practice. 4) Because of size, we have a lower budget when compared to other healthcare facilities. 5) Because we are a smaller practice physicians take on additional roles such as administration roles, this can sometimes lead to process confusion.
Threats 1) Some competitors are better positioned in the industry as they have larger names backing their practices. 2) As there are many oncology practices in the area, there has been some employee loss to those organizations. 3) The introduction of new drug specific legislation. 4) The aging of the U.S. Populations can soon overwhelm the oncology industry. 5) Everchanging systems of health insurance records as we always seem to have issues with confirming provider participating status. The SWOT analysis is “widely known to facilitate the formation of organizational or personal strategy by assessing internal and external elements” (Teoli, 2023, p. 2). As the healthcare industry is ever changing this can be an excellent way to identify anything impacting a practice from a positive or negative perspective. “When performed properly SWOT analyses can meaningfully inform strategic planning” (Walston, 2023, p. 196). My current organization is a physician owned practice with 14 locations across the regional area in which I live. Having many locations allows patients to have convenient cancer care as other practices in my area are stand along cancer programs in which patients will have to travel. Our physician owned status allows us more freedom when it comes to treating patients and the decisions we can make when it comes to patient care. Currently, I have identified many Strengths focused on patient care, convenient practice locations and other services we provide. Our goal is to make navigating a cancer diagnosis as easy as possible as it can often be a very stressful time in one’s life. Opportunities are “realities in the greater environment that can be exploited to benefit the entity” (Teoli, 2023, p. 3). Within the healthcare industry these are often focused on increased costs of drugs, and budgeting as well as the volume of healthcare organizations in the area as I live in a large healthcare driven city. Threats are more the reality of the current environment. For this analysis threats were focused on the US populations, legislation, and other practices within my region. Weaknesses for this analysis were focused on employee turnover, and the creation of relationships and processes as connections in your community will get any major health system a step ahead of other practices lacking relationships. Overall, the “SWOT analysis is a formal way to support the systematic integration of the patient and their individual issues into medical strategies while better the healthcare institution” (von Kodolitsch et al., 2015, p. 99). When thinking of the SWOT process I am reminded of the desire to better a business, in this idea, I am reminded of Philippians 1:6, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (NIV, 2018). As Christians, we must be confident in His plan for us, every decision you make should align with His strategy, not just what makes sense from an earthly perspective. As devotion to the changes in the business and the Lord is the most important thing.

In the healthcare industry, the SWOT analysis “has been principally confined to identifying the key factors, arranging them in a matrix, and reflecting on them to develop an improvement plan or strategy” (Eizaga Rebollar et al., 2020, p. 1). As the healthcare industry is ever changing, managers and administrators must stay abreast to these changes and adjust theier practice accordingly. I think your biblical integration matches perfectly as we must use our knowledge to commit to the work and He will make sure that our hard work pays off. Adding to your integration I am reminded of Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (NIV, 2018). As we must serve our work like we are serving the Lord. We can often get caught up in the busy that comes with every day that we can sometimes forget that we do everything for Him and that we must show that both inside and outside of our respective roles at work.

For the SWOT analysis you chose to focus on an outpatient therapy center. From the reading this week, we have learned that “once all the appropriate information is gathered, and classified into the four boxes (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats), there may not be an obvious way to transform it into actionable strategies” (Walston, 2023, p. 194). Sentara Therapy Services, from your analysis I can see that while Sentara can play off the name of a major health system and draw customers in that way, they struggle geographically and from a reimbursement perspective. My current role is focuses on the reimbursement space. One can have a greatly successful organization but if all is running smoothly and you are not being reimbursed correctly by major insurance companies you will eventually run into the issue of not generating a profit. A recent study has shown that the overall cost of health care is increasing for providers, consumers, and insurers. “In 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that health expenditures in the United States reached US$3.0 trillion, a 3.8% increase from 2016” (Burks et al., 2022, p. 2). You listed many opportunities and threats that can impact a number of practices as all organizations can benefit from increased collaboration and no one can control the competition and economic change that comes through and into their areas. Opportunities are “realities in the greater environment that can be exploited to benefit the entity” (Teoli, 2023, p. 3). Growth of an organization and community outreach can greatly benefit that organization as it can further help the community. As all organizations face competition in their respective regions, health systems must develop ways to set themselves apart and a SWOT analysis is a great way to develop any major organization. Hi Ashlynn, I very much enjoyed reading your SWOT Analysis for this discussion post. From the reading this week, we learned that this analysis tool can help an organization identify many characteristics and aspects of a practice that may need to be adjusted or monitored. From the reading this week, we had learned that the SWOT analysis is probably the “most used strategic planning mechanism and works best when an organization has already gathered internal and external data. Labeled the doorway to strategic planning, it can synthesize large quantities of data into issues that need to be addressed in the planning process” (Walston, 2023, p. 194). From your analysis of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, I have a sense of the facilities themselves as my city also has health systems associated with larger known universities. Looking at the strengths, similarly to my area, many migrate to facilities focused and associated with the University of Florida as that university is associated with quality and very well respected in the area. As you mentioned, Atrium Health has facility issues focusing on outdated equipment and facilities, UF Shands also garnishes a name of quality. Looking into your analysis it seems that Atrium health has great patient satisfaction numbers, in my opinion, this is one of the most important metrics as the healthcare industry is focuses on the patient’s overall well-being. Diving into weaknesses you focus on employee retention and burnout, a recent study has identified that, “More than half of the four million nurses in the United States, and one in ten nurses around the world have reported experiencing burnout, this stems from higher nurse-patient ratios, increased electronic documentation, scheduling challenges, and administration issues” (Jun et al., 2021, p. 2). My practice also struggles with turnover at our clinic locations, to combat this we just try to keep high spirits and do fun things with employees from time to time. As the SWOT analysis is focused on strategic development, I am reminded of Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans” (NIV, 2018). As the best plans for a successful business or healthcare organization are established or align with His truth. We must rely on Him to guise us through and in the right directions.
