Indications of Urinary Catheter
A urinary catheter is a hollow flexible tube that collects urine from the patient's bladder and passes it to the drainage bag. The three indications of urinary indications are acute urinary obstruction or retention, when patients are unable to empty their bladders due to reasons such as nerve damage, surgical procedure, or obstruction
(Andersen & Flores-Mireles, 2019)
. The second indication is surgery, during surgeries, a catheter is placed to reduce pressure and prevent
urine retention in the surgical suite. The third indication is palliative or comfort care, catheterization is used to measure the urine output which is vital in critical healthcare in assessing patients' kidney function and fluid balance. Other indications of urinary catheters are neurological conditions, and healing of severe wounds in patients and urinary catheters measure urinary output
What is included in a CAUTI Bundle?
A CAUTI bundle is an evidence-based intervention that aims at reducing the risk of urinary tract infections that may occur due to the usage of the urinary catheter. The bundles are used in healthcare settings to minimize risks of infections and standardize care procedures (Andersen & Flores-Mireles, 2019)
. The components of the CAUTI bundles include the appropriate use of the urinary catheter, appropriate techniques for catheter insertion, proper techniques of catheter maintenance,, quality improvement programs administrative infrastructure, and surveillance.
Steps for Removing the Catheter.
The first step for removing the catheter is emptying the bag of urine if required, washing hands with clean running water and soap, and drying them well. Gathering the supplies which 2

entail, a towel, a syringe, and a wastebasket, putting the syringe in the balloon port on the urinary
catheter, the syringe must fit tightly in the port and push firmly
(Andersen & Flores-Mireles, 2019)
. The final step is to wait for the water in the balloon to empty in the syringe. Depending on
the size of the balloon, one may be required to repeat the procedure many times until all the water drains from the balloon. Once the balloon is empty, the catheter should be pulled gently.
