Alternative Medicine Essay
As one Bulgarian proverb says, "Nature, time and patience are the three great physicians".
Nowadays more and more people choose to be treated by methods that are not based on Western
systematic techniques that are the knowledge and practice of medicine which is usual in the West.
These methods are known as "
Alternative medicine
", which consists of homeopathy, acupuncture,
aromatherapy, chiropractic medicine and others. Chinese medicine is also progressively more
accepted. Alternative way of treatment has verified its efficiency and is methodically founded, but
unfortunately has its little disadvantages and a need scientific base and its results are not always
reliable and steady. For this reason alternative medicine is not generally

Additionally, people who are well–disposed of alternative medicine argue that it is excellent because
it is natural. But not all the people who have attempted alternative medicine felt excited and
passionate about it from the start. On the opposing, many of them have doubts about it and felt
anxious or disbeliever, and after their practice and some experience they changed their mind and
were satisfied with it as they became aware of a development in their situation. On the other hand, in
other cases, people who lacked inspiration in experiencing such treatments and were not capable to
take them critically, found them unsuccessful and felt skeptical or even angry after their experience.
This reflects that most likely inspiration and conviction on the part of people play a significant part
in the outcomes of alternative medicine. So, there can be many prospective advantages in addition to
negative aspects in alternative medicine, and that its efficiency can depend a lot on people's
dependability and clichés. However it is not scientifically supported and cannot be considered as
having as reliable results as is the case of conventional medicine. In spite of this fact, many

Use of Alternative Medicine Essay
Use of Alternative Medicine There has been an explosion of interest and use of alternative
medicines and an increase in the numbers and visits to alternative practitioners in Australia
(Furnham A, Mcgill C 2003). Complementary and Alternative medicine
, also known as Traditional
medicine covers a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies. Many therapies
are termed 'holistic', which generally means that the healthcare practitioner considers the whole
person, including physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects (Moon G, Gillespie R 1995).
These forms of medicine have evolved recently as a reaction to

In Australia, research has indicated that in 1993, 48.5% of the population used at least one non–
medically prescribed alternative medicine. A$1 000 million is the estimated national expenditure on
alternative medicines and alternative practitioners per annum, of which A$621 million is spent on
alternative medicines. An Australian government report in 1996 estimated that there were at least 2.8
million traditional Chinese medicine consultations in 1996, representing an annual turnover of A$84
million within the health economy [http://www.wpro.who.int/pdf/rcom51/hsd–1e.pdf]
The Australian health–care systems has expanded and changed remarkably in recent years
(Ritenburgh C, Verhoel M et.al.) Medical practices outside the mainstream of 'official' medicine
have always been an important part of public health care. The prominence and configuration of
these irregulars as they were called, has waxed depending on the needs of the public, perceptions of
modern medicine and the changing values of society (Kats DL, Williams AL et. al 2003) A survey
conducted in 1994 revealed that reasons for alternative health care use included 'a holistic
orientation to health; having had a transformational experience that changed the person's world
view; and a classification

Alternative Medicine Essay
Alternative Medicine: Try Something New
Today more then ever alternative medicine is becoming more accepted and widely used as regular
medicine. Alternative medicine is considered the use of any medicine out of the normal of what is
considered conventional. "Alternative medicine was once considered the domain of snake oil
charlatans and gullible consumers"(Waltman, et al 1). As the growing popularity of alternative
medicines has increased, so has the number of groups and organizations set up to discover more
about these medicines. One group that is set up to discover new findings in this field is the National
Center for Complementary and Alterative Medicine and was started by a congressional mandate as

The way alternative medicines work is if a person can find a need for something there is usually a
cure or remedy out in the world.
With alternative medicine being more and more a part of everyday life, doctors are beginning to use
alternative as their main practice. Dr. Ken Bock says " with the advent of managed care, the average
doctor visit is now seven minutes and people are turning to alternative practitioners to get the care
they need"(Crone 2). This is helping because people are learning that they can find cures and
solutions to their ailments that they once thought incurable. "As people learn to take health into their
own hands, however, they still need guidance from science. After all, herbal remedies are still
unregulated by the FDA, and little is known about their long–term effects"(Crone 2). " For medical
doctors currently caring for patients with back problems, anxiety, depression or chronic pain, the
odds are greater than one in three that a patient is simultaneously using unconventional therapy for
these medical problems without disclosing this fact"(Monroe 3). Sometimes the person doesn't have
to be healed to be affected by alternative medicine. Evidence shows that unorthodox medicine does
help people feel better, even when it does not really cure the infection or disease (Monroe 3). One
alternative advocate named Dossey states "these concepts are going to cause an immense

Essay about Alternative Medicine
Alternative Medicine
Although "Alternative" or "Complementary" medicine has been kept on the fringes of the medical
sciences in the past, it is becoming increasingly more popular, and more reputable. Alternative
medicines are those medical systems which are not taught to or practiced by most conventional
medical doctors. Alternative medicines seemingly have always existed, changing and conforming to
the current climate of society. There seems to be an almost endless number of alternative medicines,
each with their own method of gaining perfect health. Often people who are dissatisfied with
conventional medicine turn to alternative medicine for their medical needs. Many similarities link
the diverse extremities of alternative medicine.

The scientific community is much quicker to label this second type as quacks, whereas the scientific
community has failed to gain a consensus on the legitimacy of the first type. Unfortunately, both are
encompassed by the term alternative medicine. This paper will focus on the more controversial
alternative medicines described in the first group.
By examining some of the most popular, enduring alternative medical systems, one can begin to see
some general trends of the systems, understand some recurring flaws, and understand the attraction
and usefulness of alternative medicine in today's health care system. However, alternative medicine
remains controversial. Whether it can be supported scientifically or not, alternative medicine may be
useful to encourage both physical and mental well–being via a placebo effect. For this reason,
alternative medicine must be considered by physicians as a complement to modern medicine.
Description of alternative medical systems (including a brief history and background):
Chiropractic treatment:
Chiropractic is one of the most respected and most prominent of alternative medicine practices.
Although many people would only consider visiting a chiropractor for the alleviation of pain caused
by musculoskeletal problems, chiropractic beliefs involve much more than just muscle
manipulation. Just over a century ago, Daniel David Palmer claimed to have cured both deafness
