What are the concerns of cosmic radiation in pregnant women? For an air crew member, the cosmic radiation dose rate is greater than the ground level during high-altitude flights The International Commission on Radiological Protection recommends a limit of 1 mSv dose throughout the pregnancy For an occasional passenger, the effect of cosmic radiation is low Risks of fetal development Germinal Stage (1 st - 2 nd weeks) High exposure can lead to death of the embryo or miscarriages (exposure of 0.1 Gy) Embryo only has few cells and if one cell is damaged, the progenitor of other cells can cause the death of embryo and blastocyst fails to implant in uterus Embryonic Stage (3 rd - 8 th week) Structural abnormalities Fetal Stage Radiation exposure after first trimester leads to birth defects, and cognitive dysfunction (mental retardation, IQ testing) Fetus is highly sensitive during 3rd - 4th week of pregnancy Increases the risk of childhood leukemia References Geeze D.
