Tennessee Kindergarten Reading and English Language Arts Standards Major Concepts During the reading portion in kindergarten the students will build knowledge from content rich nonfiction texts. Students will determine the central idea of texts and identify key details that support the central idea, story elements and make inferences and logically explain their thinking. Students will also be introduced to different types of texts as well as text features in nonfiction texts. Identification of concepts that are introduced, reinforced, and mastered. The students will be introduced to the terms key details, plot, characters, setting and will be reinforcing and mastering the definitions of author and illustrator and the roles of each. Students will also be introduced to informational text terms such as text features and different types of text. Description of each language arts standards RL. KID. 1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. RI. KID. 2 With prompting and support, orally identify the main topic and retell key details of a text. K.RL.KID.3 With prompting and support, orally identify characters, setting, and major events in a story . K.RL.CS.5 Recognize common types of texts. K.RI.CS.5 Know various text features.
