EEC3204 Assignment 6 Learning Standard Discussion Standards enable academic success for students by letting schools, teachers, parents, and students know what is expected of them. I believe the benefit of having standards in early childhood education outweighs the risk because it supports students development, wellbeing, and ability to learn. Teachers use standards-based instruction to make sure students are understanding the developmental domains that support both their current levels of readiness and their future development. Early childhood educators use the developmental domains as a kind of shorthand when considering the different aspects of each child’s overall development ( Developmental Domains - Infants & Toddlers - CCDMD , n.d.). Teachers can more easily identify the precise area of a child’s growth and learning by classifying related behaviors and skills into domains. To help students make healthy lifestyle decisions and understand how those decisions affect their health and wellbeing, schools have a crucial role to play in supporting student wellbeing. Schools can provide students with the intellectual skills required to reflect critically on these choices and on the influences that society brings to bear on them, including through peer pressure, social media, and advertising ( Developmental Domains - Infants & Toddlers - CCDMD , n.d.). Schools can encourage student’s development in their relationships, identities, emotional skills, and general wellbeing in addition to teaching them academics. In addition to helping us understand and group students according to their academic achievement level, standards also help teachers identify which students are struggling learners and how to accelerate those who are gifted. The new way of teaching is not for everyone. Some people prefer the old way of teaching if it was not complicated and required less planning. This
is one reason why someone might choose a different approach, in my opinion, because they are afraid to adapt to the new teaching and learning methods.
