Name: Sherlyn Reyes Score______/5 Pre-Lab 2 Note that failure to complete the pre-lab questions will result in your inability to participate in the lab for that day. Part 1: Read the introductory information linked in the Canvas page and answer the following questions. 1. (1.5 points). You have a specimen in focus on the microscope at 40X objective magnification. a. What is your total magnification at this point in the process? (Remember that the ocular lens is 10x; Show your work) FORMULA: The total magnification is calculated by multiplying the magnification of the objective lens by the magnification of the ocular lens. RESOLUTION: Total Magnification = 40X (objective) × 10X (ocular) = 400X b. After the specimen is in focus using the 40X objective, summarize the remaining steps needed to view the specimen at 100X objective magnification. Don’t forget to mention the oil! What is your total final magnification at this point? (Remember that the ocular lens is 10x) NEXT STEPS: Use the fine focus knob to bring the specimen into focus at 100X. Apply a small drop of immersion oil to the slide. Rotate the nosepiece to the 100X objective position. Use the fine focus knob to bring the specimen into sharp focus. 2. (1.5 points) Match the following terms with their definitions: C Resolution a. A picture taken of a sample through a microscope B Refraction b. The bending of light as it passes through materials (such as glass) D Magnification c. Clarity of an image; the ability of a lens to distinguish 2 distinct points A Micrograph d. The apparent increase in size of a given object when viewed through a microscope
6.Objective Lens 3. (2 points) Label the microscope below: Use the following terms: Base, Arm, Ocular lens, Objective Lens, Stage, Lamp, Condenser, Coarse Focus Knob, Fine Focus Knob 1. Diopter Adjustment 7. Frame (harm) 2 Mechanical Stage 3 Condenser 8. Coarse Adjustment 4. 4. Illumination 9. Fine Adjustment 5. Base
