I greatly appreciate your support on my 3D printed low-cost finger prosthetic project. I have developed a feasibility report to share with the team as a way of identifying the logistical, financial, and market challenges that come with starting a new project like this.
Purpose
Introduction
Introducing Tech Solutions to the untapped market of upper extremity finger prosthetics will widen its patient outreach and open up new avenues for growth and market expansion. After this project is completed, Tech Solutions will have established a reputation for pioneering cutting-edge advancements in the medical device and prosthetic market. Purpose
The overall objective of the customized 3D printed finger prosthetic project is to provide a cost-effective, functional, and personalized solution for individuals with partial finger amputations. With the proposed prosthetic, patients will be provided with an improved quality of life and be able to perform daily tasks with ease. This economical solution will be accessible to a broad demographic given its low financial burden on patients that does not compromise quality. The 3D printed prosthetic also will be available to a wide range of individuals with varying residual limb anatomies due to its customizable ability. Technical Feasibility
Introducing Tech Solutions to the untapped market of upper extremity finger prosthetics will widen its patient outreach and open up new avenues for growth and market expansion
. After this project is completed,
Tech Solutions will have established a reputation for pioneering cutting-edge advancements in the medical device and prosthetic market. With the execution of the 3D printed finger prosthetic project, there are several challenges that could arise during its development and implementation. It is crucial that we anticipate these ahead of time so that if and when they do arise, we are able to address the issues in the most efficient matter. 1.
3D Printing Specifications Because prosthetics are customized to the specifics of a person’s residual limb, the measurements are required to be exact to ensure a perfect fit. This required level of precision is not always achievable in 3D
printing, so it is possible that customizations will have to be made after the print is completed. Determining the most suitable and durable
filament to use in the 3D printing process also poses as a challenge. It is
important to find a material that is biocompatible with a perfect balance between flexibility and strength. 2.
User Input Customizations
A huge part of this project is based on the accuracy of user input. This project relies on the accuracy of user input specifically for customization purposes, so if a user provides input that does not match similar users, misunderstandings on what the 3D printed design requires could be created. Finger amputations affect all ranges of ages, but most are younger than 5 years old or greater than 65 years old. Understanding the specific needs each age range needs of a finger prosthetic
will be cruc
ial in the development of this prosthetic. 3.
Medical Device Stringent Guidelines With the creation of any medical device, there are stringent regulations that govern the production and distribution processes. Following these standards will ensure the 3D printed prosthetic meets the necessary safety and quality standards. On the user end of medical device regulations, p
atients will need to consult with their hand doctor to determine whether or not this 3D printed finger prosthetic would be the best prostheses option for them.
4.
Cost Benefit Ratio
The cost of 3D printing a finger prosthetic is around $20. This Finally, this whole project revolves around the balance between affordability and quality in a finger prosthetic. This poses as a huge challenge, especially when dealing with advanced technologies.
By pricing these prosthetics around $1
00-$150, Tech Solutions will need to maximize their profitability while still appealing to consumers.
Alternative S
o
l
utions
Based on the potential problems outlined for the customized 3D finger prosthetic project, several criteria can be established to determine the project’s feasibility and success. These include evaluating the cost-effectiveness and affordability of the 3D finger prosthetics while ensuring adherence to regulatory compliance and safety standards. Additionally, assessing the user’s perception on the product could potentially address psychological barriers or biases with the 3D printed finger prosthetic. On top of that, assessing the current market landscape to determine how this 3D printed prosthetic is needed on the market will give the medical device insight
on how to promote the technology effectively. After examining all of this criteria, informed decisions can be made by you and stakeholders to decide whether or not and how to proceed with the development of the 3D printed finger prosthetic project.
Economic Feasibility
The 3D printed finger prosthetic project will involve various cost factors including materials, equipment, labor, research and development, regulatory compliance,
marketing, and overhead expenses. Specifically 3D printing filaments and resigns of medical grade quality will be required for material assurance. We will utilize the Igloo 3D printed already set up in the back office to help mitigate costs surrounding the project. Potential maintenance and upgrades will be needed over a long period of time. Developing a team of engineers, skilled technicians, and designers will help this project move as smoothly as possible. This research and development team will be given funds to further their research and development initiatives on improving the current design of the printed finger prosthetic. Lastly, costs will also include legal fees towards regulatory compliance and intellectual property protection.
Recommendations
In conclusion, the customized 3D printed finger prosthetic project will be able to turn Tech Solutions into an innovative leader for medical device solutions. I am recommending that we immediately invest the proper resources towards research and development for advancing prosthetic designs through enhanced functionality and optimized production processes. Engage with the appropriate regulatory authorities so that approvals and certifications can be expedited, ensuring timely market entry and compliance. Lastly, explore potential strategic partnerships and collaborations that optimize cost-efficiency. Promote the project on social media platforms like Tiktok
TikTok
or Instagram and healthcare networks to raise awareness, generate demand, and encourage the widespread adoption of customized prosthetics. Executive Summary
Tech Solution will be able to pioneer innovation in the upper extremity finger prosthetics market with the implementation of this 3D printed finger prosthetic project. W
ith 45,000 people receiving a finger amputation annually in the US, this initiative
will be able to fulfill the unmet needs of thousands through this cost-
effective and personalized solution. Despite the anticipated technical challenges in 3D precision p
rinting and regulatory compliance, strategic investments in research and development, as well as market promotion will
help
ensure project success. With
these best practices implemented into the project, Tech Solutions ca
n establish itself
as a leader in innovative medical solutions while
I am confident that we

Problem 3: A small gearing system in your brand-new 3D printer fails as you were printing,
leading to an overload in the motor and a fire in your home. The fire spreads, burning half of
Everglades National Park in the worst environmental disaster in US history.
The printer company blames you! Stating that you must have been misusing the printer some-
how. Use your engineering knowledge to "show those jerks you mean business!"
You investigate and find a serial number on the gears and type it into Google, finding the
company that manufactures the gears. Their website provides some info that this series of gear is
made from AISI 4340 steel and the yield strength is 125 kpsi.
Assuming each gear tooth acts as a small cantilever, prove to the 3D printer company that they
are liable for the fire.
