2 The industry that I know the best and have spent the majority of career involved in, is the engineering, research, and development of HVAC products. For this assignment I will explore the way artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will impact and change this industry. Currently, the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence within my selected industry is gaining more traction as each day passes. Specifically, AI and ML algorithms are currently being used to design and optimize mechanical systems, also simulations are leveraged to analyze and forecast performance, identify potential issues, and suggest changes [ CITATION Ara22 \l 1033 ]. Today AI/ML eases challenges within the design process, decreases test time to prove concepts with the use of simulation models, and helps identify weaknesses in designs earlier, allowing for faster response time to correct issues. In my opinion as the use and understanding of AI and ML continues to grow and the technology advances, we will see changes within the engineering R&D industry. Most notably, I believe an increase in productivity and efficiency will be seen. AI and ML can perform tasks at a pace humans are not capable of, such as forecasting, predictions, and the processing of massive amounts of data [ CITATION CGC23 \l 1033 ]. Another benefit is the ability of AI/ML to identify current and potential pain points. This identification will allow these issues to be remedied before they become actual problems and a faster and more agile response to problems that do arise. AI/ML offers many benefits in terms of increased efficiency for engineering R&D. Task automation, improved quality, improved designs, and cost reductions are benefits of the implementation of AI/ML [ CITATION Ski231 \l 1033 ]. Many fear that with these process improvements the elimination of existing jobs will take place, according to experts the use of
3 AI/ML will cause the creation new jobs within the engineering field [ CITATION God23 \l 1033 ]. While some industries (especially those involving unskilled labor) will see job eliminations due to AI/ML, this will not be the case with engineering. Increased productivity, more and better tools to complete tasks from AI/ML use will benefit engineering R&D employees working conditions, work life balance, and overall workload. The main potential threats that must be considered with the adoption of AI/ML are data privacy, data poisoning, and model extraction [ CITATION Art23 \l 1033 ]. For the engineering industry a chief concern would be the protection of sensitive data such as intellectual property, patents, designs, algorithms, and forecasting models. An organization will have to ensure proper security measures are in place and assess their own risk tolerance as the use of AI/ML increases within engineering R&D.
