Report
The nurse innovator is described as a divergent thinker according to Cianelli, et al. (2016). Divergent thinking consists of thought processes that do not necessarily move toward a single solution (Guilford, 1967). It is a necessary characteristic that encompasses the ability to be creative when thinking of solutions. The innovator must also be proactive in approaching process changes, meaning he/she must look at improvement processes even when no error has occurred in the current process. Cianelli, et al. (2016) also describes the innovator as someone who engages in risk taking, has failure tolerance, agility, flexibility, and promotes autonomy and freedom. Risk taking is part of the divergent thinking process as you must be willing to take risks to be innovative in finding what works well. With every risk comes the chance of failure, therefore failure tolerance is necessary to be able to continue to move the process change forward. Agility and flexibility must be a characteristic of not only the innovator but also the organization. With an ever-changing market, adapting to developing trends, treatments and regulations is key (Cianelli, et al. 2016). “Employees with autonomy and freedom are more likely to engage in divergent thinking and risk taking; accept failure as a necessary part of success; and exhibit agility/ flexibility in performing tasks and designing solutions with an innovative perspective ” (Cianelli, et al. 2016)
