Khalif Ortega Beckles 40130010 MECH 425 Homework 2 1. ( 3marks): Show the chemical reaction that forms a polyester made of maleic acid and propylene glycol. Show also the chemical reaction for crosslinking using styrene.
2. (6 marks): It is desired to make a polyester using 200g of maleic acid and propylene glycol. A stoichiometric amount of propylene glycol is used. Cross linking is done using styrene. a) After the condensate is removed, how many grams of polyester is obtained? Mass per mole of maleic acid: 4C+4O+4H = 4(12) + 4(16) + 4(1) = 116g/mol Mass per mole of propylene: 2C+2O+8H = 2(12) + 2(16) + 8(1) = 64g/mol Mass per mole of polyester: 6C+4O+8H = 6(12) + 4(16) + 8(1) = 144g/mol 200g of maleic acid is used: 200 g x = 116 g 144 g → x = 200 g 144 g 116 g = 248.28 g 248.28g of polyester is obtained b) How much heat is generated? Energy within bonds C-C bond: 370 KJ/mol C=C bond: 680 KJ/mol Polyester has 4 C-C bonds and 2 C=C bonds The heat exiting from C-C bond: 4*(370 KJ/mol) = 1480 KJ The heat entering from C=C bond: 2*(680 KJ/mol) = 1360 KJ
The heat generated from 1 mole is: 1480KJ – 1360 KJ = 120 KJ 1 mole of polyester is 248.28 g 144 ( g mol ) = 1.724 moles The heat generated is (1.724mole)*(120KJ/mole) = 206.88 KJ
