Detailed assignment brief
Resources
and
Bibliography:
The aim of this assignment is to understand the nature of the wind resource; to learn
how to conduct
a site-specific analysis of the wind environment from measured data on the site in order to estimate
the suitability of the site for wind turbine applications.
An excel file is provided, with one year of
historic wind speed data from this site
1
. The site is considered for installation of a wind
turbine. With this consideration in mind, analyze the available data to critically address the
following topics and evaluate the suitability of the site for wind energy applications.
Task A: Wind speed distribution (annual).
Plot the annual distribution of the wind
speed
magnitude in ms
-1
(i.e. plot the number of hours per year that the wind speed
takes
value within a certain range)
(i)
as this can be obtained from the measured data and
(ii)
as this can be derived using a long-term average value of annual mean wind
speed for the site (obtained, for example, from publications/tables or
the
measurements) and Rayleigh distribution.
Plot the results of Tasks A (i) and A (ii) on the same graph, explain, briefly, how the
graphs
are generated, critically evaluate your results and compare the results of the
distributions in A (i) and A (ii).
Task B: Wind turbine siting.
You want to install an 11 kW wind turbine at your site
you are
considering the one with the specifications given in the pdf file provided with this
assignment. Discuss the suitability of this wind turbine for your site, based only on the
available wind resource at this site (without including
economic evaluation or other
factors that may affect the suitability).
You are required to produce a
Written Report,
the requirements of which are explained
here:
Written Report: 1500 WORDS
font size 11 or 12; line spacing 1.5
Your report should include (i) The title of the assignment (ii) A brief introduction, up to
150 words. The introduction will include a subsection on the description of the site and
available data, (iii) Two sections to
address tasks A and B with the corresponding
headings. These sections will include brief theoretical background on each task (iv)
Conclusions. (v) References. (vi) Appendices. The report should be submitted through
Blackboard.
Resources
An excel file is provided, with one year of historic wind speed data from this site
A pdf file with the wind turbine specifications (for part B of this assignment)
Assessment
criteria
1. Report structure & presentation (LO 1,3-5): 20%
2. Introduction & conclusions (LO 1,3-5): 20%
3. Task A: Wind speed distribution (LO 1): 30 %
4. Task B: Wind turbine siting (LO 3-5): 30 %
2. Learning outcomes
The assignment should produce sufficient evidence for
partial
fulfilment of the following module learning outcomes:
(1)
Use comprehensive mathematical models for the analysis and
evaluation of
the nature of renewable energy sources and assess
the limitations
(3)
Identify and critically evaluate appropriate technologies for
energy extraction in a renewable energy project
.
(4)
Apply mathematical models to calculate the output from
renewable energy
sources and assess the limitations of particular
cases
.
(5)
Thoroughly assimilate and critically evaluate current
practices, limitations and likely new developments in
renewable energy technology

Question 3
The activity relation chart for NOFRILLS departmental store in Richmond Hill is shown in the figure below.
The space requirements are in square feet. Construct the relationship diagram and develop a block layout
using the systematic layout planning (SLP) method. Your solution must include flow-between chart,
activity relationship chart, value chart, nodal relationship, block calculations, and grid representation, as
covered in class.

You are assigned as the head of the engineering team to work on selecting the right-sized blower that will go on your new line of hybrid vehicles. The fan circulates the warm air on the inside of the windshield to stop condensation of water vapor and allow for maximum visibility during wintertime (see images). You have been provided with some info. and are asked to pick from the bottom table, the right model number(s) that will satisfy the requirement. Your car is equipped with a fan blower setting that allow you to choose between speeds 0, 1,2 and 3. Variation of the convection heat transfer coefficient is dependent upon multiple factors, including the size and the blower configuration. You can only use the following parameters:

Case Study – The New Engineer
Jeff was just hired by GSI, Inc. to be their Environmental and Safety Coordinator. This is Jeff's first position after completing his engineering degree. He had taken a course in safety engineering as part of his studies and felt confident that he could handle the job.
Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.
In talking with the workers, Jeff learns of some of…

A Team of Engineers asked for an internal combustion engine to use it in a designed car. Your role is to describe the operation sequence of different types of available engines, explain their mechanical efficiency, and deliver a detailed technical report to show your approach in solving and discussing the following tasks and issues.
You must follow the following steps to help the team:
STEP 1
Describe the operational sequence of four-stroke spark ignition and four-stroke compression ignition engines with the aid of sketches by constructing simple sketch representing the operation and plotting the P-V diagrams for each process during the cycle to show the following:
The input and output heat and net output work
The expansion and compression strokes
The air-fuel mixture intake and exhaust gasses
The spark plug when it is in the active mode
The complete cycle of ideal Otto and Diesel cycles that shows the input and output heat and net output work.
STEP 2
Explain the mechanical…
