Page 1 of 2 Important Kitchen Planning Guidelines/Measurements This document contains all of the important kitchen design guidelines and measurements that I referenced throughout the course. Many of these guidelines come from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Kitchen Layouts No leg of the work triangle should measure less than 1.22 m or more than 2.75 m; additionally, the sum of the distances between them should be no more than 7.93 m. A minimum of 92 cm between your counter and your island for adequate walkway, but if there are appliances in the area, the aisle should be 107 – 122 cm wide. Always keep hot and cold areas separated, such as your refrigerator and range. Cabinetry Finished height of base cabinets with countertops will be 92 cm high and are generally 61 cm deep. (Other depths are available) Upper wall cabinets should begin 138 cm above the finished floor and are commonly 92 or 107 cm high and 31 cm deep. (Other heights and depths are available) Open Shelving Shelves should be between 31-41 cm deep. My recommendation is to leave approximately 31 cm between the top of one shelf and the bottom of the shelf above it. Kitchen Islands Built-in islands ideally are at least 1.22m long and 61cm deep. If installing a sink in your island, it should be at least 107 cm deep. Islands should be 92 cm high, but you may want to add a 77 cm high drop-down station for kneading dough. Ensure a minimum of 92 cm, but ideally 107 cm, around all sides to accommodate traffic. Increase to 122 cm for universal design. For island seating, ensure 61 cm of width for each person and ideally a 38 - 46 cm overhang. For comfortable knee space, include: o 46 cm for a 77 cm high island o 38 cm for a 92 cm high island o 31 cm for a 107 cm high island
Page 2 of 2 Lighting To determine the appropriate diameter of your chandelier, flush mount or semi- flush mount for your kitchen, add the length and the width of your room. For example, a 10’ x 10’ kitchen looks best with a 20” diameter fixture (10+10=20). If you like a more oversized look, add 5 to that number (25”). To determine the diameter of your chandeliers or pendants over a kitchen island, add the length of the width of the island. For example, if you have a 6’ x 9’ island, the width of each fixture should be 15”. Note: These rules of thumb do not work in the metric system. To use them, you will need to convert your measurements into the imperial system and then back again. Appliances With most models, your range hood should be as wide as or 8 cm wider than your cooktop. To determine the appropriate fan size (CFM) for your range hood, consider range width, BTU output, and kitchen size – choose the highest number. Your primary sink should be placed across from, or adjacent to, cooktop and refrigerator. Have at least a 61 cm wide landing area to one side of the sink and a 46 cm wide landing on the other side of the sink. Your sink should be located within 92 cm from your dishwasher. Installing pot filler 33 – 41 cm above your cooktop will work for most kitchens. Hardware For minimalist and industrial type styles, drawer pulls (handles) look best at 2/3 to 3/4 the length of the drawer. For all other styles, drawer pulls (handles) look best at 1/3 the length of the drawer. Rugs You should leave 31 – 46 cm between your rug and your cabinetry, although you can go as close as 16 cm. A 61-122 cm size rug is usually a good choice for in front of the sink.
