When reading the requirements of this assignment, I struggled with the thought of how I would connect
a biblical worldview to mathematics. This can be quite hard to do as an educator in the public education
school setting. However, I feel that it is important as a Christian educator, to hold onto biblical principles
and connect them to reality through teaching. While engaged in this week’s assigned reading, I was
reminded of how God created all things. Math is also included in his list of creations. This is evident in
Colossians 1:16, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for
him” (New International Version, 2011). God created all things for our good and with an intended
purpose.
If we take a moment to reflect on math concepts such as the Pythagorean Theorem, we know that when
we follow the formula, it will always work and it will never fail. It provides consistency when applied
correctly, and does not yield untrue results. We can count on it to work every time. According to Hannon
(2021), this is an example of the “orderly way that Gold holds everything together” and provides “real-
life consistencies” (Hannon, 2021, p. 163). Because of this, we need to view math as a gift from God.
Math is a subject that many of us have struggled with. We will encounter students who may share
similar experiences with math. It is our goal as Christian educators to remind our students that God who
is the source of math, created us as well, and in his image. Therefore, we are equipped with the
knowledge and skills we need to be successful when it comes to being able to complete mathematical
tasks. By approaching our teaching of mathematics from a biblical worldview, we can help alter the
negative feelings many students have toward the subject.
