RTI and MTSS
(Response to Intervention and Multi Tiered Systems of Support)
•
Intended to prevent failure in school through early intervention, frequent progress monitoring, and a system multi tiers •
Standard 3 tiers of assessment, though not the case for every school
•
Problem solving approach or Standard treatment protocol approach
•
In many cases, Tier 3 tends to lead to special education referral
•
Not only does it focus on academics, but also on social behaviors
•
Multiple components are used such as screening, progress monitoring, data-based decision making, implementation of multiple tiers of intervention, and fidelity of implementation
•
Helps with relationship building, which ultimately helps kids succeed in school
•
The tiers specifics will be different in every school
Tier Levels
•
Tier 1-Universal intervention such as regular classroom instruction
•
Tier 2-Targeted instruction, given to small groups who need the extra help
•
Tier 3-Intensive intervention, such as individual instruction or IEP

Utilizing RTI and MTSS to enhance instruction
•
Calls for use of differentiated instruction
•
Alone it can help them learn and grow
•
Helps determine need for individualized instruction or Special Education
Child Study Team (CST)
•
The CST’s job is to evaluate the students who have not shown progress after reasonable modifications have been made for the student.

CST Data
Reading
Data to be Collected •
Screening/Tier 1-Classroom instruction as usual. Typical whole class progress monitoring as per state recommendations. Teacher will record all results over time. Refer for Tier 2 if fallen behind normal reading score range consistently.
•
Tier 2-Each week, Tier 2 students will get an end of the week reading comprehension quiz, oral reading fluency check, and nonsense word check with small step goals. If, over the course of 6 weeks, 3 weeks in a row have hit the small step goals, continue as is until at grade level. If 3 in a row have missed the small step goal, adjustments will be necessary.
•
Tier 2/3-After adjustments have been made and continued to be tracked weekly, if they are not working, refer for Tier 3.
•
Tier 3-Refer for Special Education.
CST Data
Math
Data to be Collected •
Screening/Tier 1-1-Classroom instruction as usual. Typical whole class progress monitoring as per state recommendations. Teacher will record all results over time. Refer for Tier 2 if fallen behind normal math score range consistently.
•
Tier 2-Students will be sectioned into a small group and receive small group instruction via a qualified tutor or teacher. Each week they will be given a 5 question quiz to see if there is progress. There will be a mix of word problems and standard problems. This will continue for 6 weeks. When 3 quizzes in a row have been passed they can be bumped back to Tier 1. If they have not been able to do so by the end of the monitoring period, adjustments will be made to instruction.
•
Tier 2/3- If another 6 weeks go by with minimal-no progress with modified instruction, refer for Tier 3.
•
Tier 3-Refer for Special Education.

•
Behavioral problems
•
Consistently low scores
•
Below grade level in 1 or more subjects
How Does This Help Students with NO Disability?
•
Quality Instruction

Research-based Intervention Strategies
•
Sight Words
Fry’s instant sight words are meant to improve reading skills. Once the first 100 are mastered, students will be able to read about 50% of texts out there. This helps students in multiple grades.
Research-based Intervention Strategies
•
Increased Independent Reading Time
Students need practice in all things they do. Having students increase their reading time gives them the practice they need to become independent readers.
Research-based Intervention Strategies
•
Technology Assisted Reading
Children are able to read along with a technology assisted reader. The goal here is to have them recognize what words look like.

Research-based Intervention Strategies
•
Math Journal
Having students “think about their thinking” in solving math can be an invaluable resource.
Research-based Intervention Strategies
•
Manipulatives
Using manipulatives, such as blocks or pennies, can provide a better visual for students.
Data to be Collected
•
Sight Word scores with graphs showing mastered words over time
•
Words per minute scores to see if independent reading is improving
•
Math Journals can be assessed weekly to check how they’re solving their problems
•
Students use manipulatives during assignments/tests to show they understand putting things in and taking them away (or addition and subtraction)
