One Day at a Time Here is the first draft of Jamie's essay. It may contain errors. (1) Elizabeth stared at the front of the school as she sat quietly in her wheelchair. (2) She remembered what her mom told her before they left the house that morning. (3) "One day at a time, Elizabeth." (4) She heard what her mom said, but didn't really listen because she was too nervous for her first day back. (5) Elizabeth hadn't seen any of her friends, besides Savannah, since the accident. (6) Savannah visited her everyday, even when Elizabeth was in the hospital's intensive care unit. (7) She was always a great friend. (8) Elizabeth's world had changed so much. (9) Mrs. McCarthy, Elizabeth's teacher, called her at home a few days before her first day back to help her feel welcomed. (10) Nervously, Elizabeth went up the ramp which led to the front entrance of the building. (11) She never even used the handicap ramp before; instead, she always used the steps. (12) Michael held the double doors open for her. (13) Michael said he missed her while she was away. (14) Shyly, she told him she missed him too. (15) As she went through the main hallway, students rushed by her, trying to get to their class. (16) Some of them passed by without saying anything, others said a quiet hello, while a few students just stared. (17) Elizabeth was used to all the staring. (18) It still hurt her to know they stared because she was different. (19) Mrs. McCarthy held the classroom door open for Elizabeth to go inside. (20) Room 7 looked exactly the same, except the bulletin boards were decorated for Valentine's Day instead of Thanksgiving. (21) She was happy to see that Mrs. McCarthy put her desk next to Savannah's. (22) The late bell rang and everyone sat quietly at their desks as Mrs. McCarthy started teaching. (23) At 10:45, Mrs. McCarthy dismissed the class for morning recess. (24) Elizabeth felt the day went really well so far. (25) Elizabeth was worried about her first recess. (26) Savannah and Michael waited for her before they went outside. (27) The three of them quickly went to the lunch tables so they could play a card game. (28) Elizabeth didn't remember the last time she played a game of "Go Fish" with her friends. (29) Her friends didn't even go easy on her, but she was really grateful for that. (30) She liked the fact that things seemed like normal. My First Piano Recital The following is a rough draft of Terry's essay. It may contain errors. I sat with my hand in my pocket rubbing my tiny glass unicorn. When I heard my piano teacher call my name, my stomach did a flip. I tried to concentrate on keeping my knees from shaking as I walked across the stage to sit at the piano bench. It was a relief to sink down onto the bench knowing I'd at least avoided falling flat on my face across the stage. However, looking down at the piano keys made me nervous all over again. My hands were damp with sweat and felt like slippery wet fish. My mind went blank as if I'd never practiced the music I was supposed to now perform. With a quick glance, I checked for an escape route. The auditorium was full of people and the lights at the edge of the stage made it difficult to see to the back of the room. However, there was a door at the far side of the stage which held the promise of escape. An exit plan flashed through my mind. I could run out the door and hide in the garden or even under a blanket in the back of my parents' van. Then I realized Mrs. Hayden was finishing her introduction to the audience. "Terry, you may begin playing 'The Happy Wanderer' whenever you are ready." "Would next week be alright?" I asked. The sound of laughter from the audience helped me suddenly relax. The tune came flooding back to me and my hands flew over the keys without my even thinking. It sounded like it had during my many hours of practice. As I finished, I was flooded with relief. I hopped up off the bench and made a quick bow. I felt like I floated back to my seat, I was so happy to be done. Now I know I can do hard things. I'm glad I didn't use my exit plan after all. The Wooden Elephant Here is the first draft of Kasey's essay. It may contain errors. (1) In a small village in the southern part of Africa, two brothers played outside underneath the sun. (2) It had been raining for days. (3) There were puddles of water everywhere. (4) Buru, the older brother, usually helped his father farm the land from sun up to sun down. (5) That particular morning, however, his father let him run around outside with his younger brother, Chiumbo. (6) The two brothers ran through the village to get to the nearby trees to play a game of hide–and–seek. (7) Normally, the boys would stop to look at beautiful birds, but this time they rushed to play their game. (8) Chiumbo loved to hide behind fallen trees. (9) It was very easy for him to hide, because he was quite small. (10) In fact, Chiumbo got his name because he was very little when he was born. (11) Buru enjoyed trying to find his brother, because Chiumbo was able to hide in such good places. (12) Chiumbo looked for a place to hide. (13) He found something strange peeking through the dirt. (14) He yelled for his older brother to come see what treasure he found. (15) When Buru found his brother, he looked in the dirt to see what it was. (16) There, hidden in the earth, was a toy wooden elephant. (17) It was the color of a purple orchid, a beautiful flower grown in Africa. (18) They ran back to their home to tell their mother. (19) She was preparing for supper when they came bursting through the door to their wood–framed house. (20) The young boys showed their mother the elephant. (21) It was the wooden toy her husband had carved for her when they first met. (22) Chiumbo asked how it ended up in the nearby trees. (23) Their mother told them how she had always kept it in her dress pocket. (24) One day, when she went to bring her husband some water while he was farming, she checked on Buru and Chiumbo while they played by the trees. (25) The elephant must have fallen out of her pocket then. (26) It was Buru's turn to hide, even though it was pretty easy for Chiumbo to find him, because he was not small at all. (27) The two boys laughed and played until it was time for Buru to go out into the fields with their father. The Truth about George Washington George Washington was very famous. He was a general in the Revolutionary War. Then he served as the first President of the United States, but he is also remembered for many other reasons. Many myths were told about George Washington. People believed these myths even though they were untrue. People actually thought he had false teeth that were made from wood. Many still tell of the time he chopped down a cherry tree. Others believe he actually threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River. He was definitely a famous man, but these stories were nothing more than myths. Wooden Teeth? George Washington lost his teeth when he was very young. He had two sets of false teeth. They were not made from wood. They were carved from hippopotamus ivory and even gold. The most interesting thing about his false teeth was how they were wired. The lower and upper parts of these teeth were connected by springs. They pushed the two parts into the upper and lower ridges of his mouth to hold them in place. The springs made his mouth want to pop open. He had to bite down all the time to keep his mouth shut. Maybe that is why he always looked so serious. A Chopped Cherry Tree? According to another myth, George Washington was given a hatchet when he was only six years old. He used it to cut down everything he saw. One day, he chopped down a beautiful cherry tree. When his father asked him who cut the tree down, he answered, "I cannot tell a lie. I cut it with my hatchet." This story was made up by a biographer, Mason Weems, who wanted to describe George Washington as an honest man. A Flying Dollar? George Washington never threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River. The river is a mile wide, and there were no silver dollars during this time. It is unlikely that anyone could throw that far. Perhaps this story was told to make people think he was very strong. Many still wonder how he did it. George Washington did not need these legends to be remembered. After all, he helped the Colonists win the war against England and was the first President of the United States. That is why he is the most famous person in history.
