Use Excel to create a scatterplot of this data. Find the trendline and the coefficient of correlation (r) for this data. Finally answer the questions about the results. 4) Use the equation and predict the winning speed for 1977. 5) Use the equation and predict the winning speed for 1995. 6) Use the equation and predict the winning speed for 2007. 7) Use the equation and predict the winning speed for 2021. 8) Use the equaton and predict the winning speed for 2025. 1900 1920 1940 1960 1980 2000 2020 2040 0 50 100 150 200 250 f(x) = 1.19954542677043 x − 2213.84404689846 R² = 0.963546001828037 Winning speed
MATH106 - Statistics 1 Mod2 Project Page 2 2010 191.188 2015 201.193 2020 221.6 9) What do you think about the predictions for 1977, 1995, 2007, 2021? Are they reasonable? Why or why not? 10) What do you think about the prediction for 2025? Is it reasonable? Why or why not? 11) Now consider the correlation coefficient? What is this number telling you (e.g. what does it mean)? 12) Now consider the coefficient of determination? What is this number telling you (e.g. what does it mean)? I think the predictions for 1977, 1995, 2007 and 2021 are resonable. They are having a positive correlation to the other years and speeds in the data chart and flowing with the current data. I think the prediction for 2025 is unreasonable as it does not correlate with the other variables and it should have a strong correlation as the r is greater than 0.70. The correlation coefficient tells me that there is a strong positive linear relationship between the variables due to the correlation coeffcient being close to 1. The coefficient of determination tells me that if it 0.96 then there is 96% of the variation in y is explained by the linear relationship with x.
