Differentiated instruction
Differentiated instruction and Universal Design could benefit our fourth-grade
African American students struggling in math and any student from diverse
backgrounds. Using Different strategies will help meet the needs of all students. Using
multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression will help strengthen
math concepts. Educators can address individual learning styles and preferences.
According to Willis, M. G. (1989) “A review of theories, research, and models of the
learning styles of Black children reveals that Black children generally learn in ways
characterized by factors of social/affective emphases, harmony, holistic perspectives,
expressive creativity, and nonverbal communication.” When this group of students
struggles in math the use of visual aids, real-world examples, and multimedia resources
will help make abstract concepts more concrete. African American students who have
strengths in the arts and expression may benefit from collaboration and alternative
assessments. These strategies can create a more inclusive environment and support
student success.

The selection of instructional materials is very important. It is the backbone of
instruction. Our school has an adoption cycle that keeps all of our curriculum up to date.
It is reviewed on a 5-year cycle. We also review the curriculum if we see a need by
analyzing data. The cycle is split up into 3 stages. The stages are committee work,
implementation, and evaluation/monitoring. Each subject is assigned a stage depending
on the year it is in. During committee work teachers along with the curriculum
coordinator of that subject use a textbook evaluation tool to evaluate the curriculum.
They have a series of meetings to go over the material's strengths and weaknesses. A
component of this tool is questions about whether the material is inclusive and provides
opportunities for all learners. This component is critical and all teachers evaluate this
very closely.
Support
There are several areas that we need to work on to have a successful
differentiated classroom. One area would be meaningful differentiated centers. Centers
should be going on at least 3 times a week. Data should be collected to make these
instructional decisions throughout the week. Centers should be based on standards and
either remediate or enrich a student. The fourth-grade students who struggle in math at
our school need remediation centers that meet their needs.
